FG Commends Governor Yusuf for Signing Kano Centre for Disease Control Law

The Federal Government has applauded Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, for signing into law the establishment of the Kano Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, a move aimed at strengthening the state’s capacity to combat infectious and tropical diseases.

The commendation came from the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Muhammad Pate, who led a high-powered delegation from the ministry, the Gates Foundation, and the Aliko Dangote Foundation on a courtesy visit to the Kano State Government House on Wednesday.

A statement by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, highlighted that Professor Pate’s commendation came less than 24 hours after the governor assented to the bill, expressing confidence that the new law would enhance disease surveillance, prevention, and control mechanisms in the state.

Speaking during the visit, Professor Pate revealed that the delegation was in Kano to assess the recent resurgence of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV) in the state, calling for an urgent, coordinated response to curb its spread.

He also raised concerns over Kano’s alarming maternal and newborn mortality rate, which stands at 639 deaths per 100,000 live births—well above the national average. According to the minister, reducing these deaths in Kano would significantly improve Nigeria’s overall health indicators.

To bolster healthcare delivery, Professor Pate announced plans for Federal Government intervention, including the establishment of three maternal care centers and the expansion of primary healthcare services under a special intervention initiative.

In his remark Governor Yusuf, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Faruq Umar Ibrahim, reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to eradicating poliovirus and improving public health in Kano. 

He pledged to sustain collaborations with the Gates and Dangote Foundations, recognizing their longstanding commitment to healthcare development in the state.

He noted that while his administration has made significant strides in the health sector, critical challenges remain, particularly in routine immunization, maternal health, and supply chain management. 

In response, Governor Yusuf vowed to intensify immunization efforts, enhance the capacity of healthcare workers, and ensure the availability of essential vaccines.

Furthermore, he disclosed that his government had reinstated counterpart funding for routine immunization, addressing gaps inherited from the previous administration and reaffirming its commitment to strengthening primary healthcare services.

On his part Dr. Chris Elias, President of Global Development at the Gates Foundation, recalled that the organization had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Kano State Government in 2012 to eradicate polio and strengthen routine immunization. 

However, with the resurgence of cVDPV, he emphasized the need for renewed efforts to eliminate the disease once and for all.

Similarly, Dr. Ahmad Iyan, a representative of the Aliko Dangote Foundation, conveyed Alhaji Aliko Dangote’s deep concern over the poliovirus resurgence in Kano. 

He stressed that the business magnate remains committed to ensuring Nigeria is completely free from polio.

Dr. Iyan acknowledged the frustration of returning to the fight against poliovirus a decade after the last recorded case of wild poliovirus in Kano but urged all stakeholders to intensify efforts in tackling the root causes of the outbreak.

With strong commitments from both the state and federal governments, alongside continued support from international partners, Kano is set to reinforce its healthcare system and combat emerging health threats. 

As stakeholders gear up for a renewed fight against poliovirus and other public health challenges, the establishment of the Kano Centre for Disease Control marks a critical step toward safeguarding the health and well-being of millions of residents.

Northwest University VC tasks Staff on sportsmanship in Staff Games opener

The vice chancellor of Northwest University Kano, Professor Muktar Atiku Kurawa has described sports as a way of keeping and improving the health status of the staff.

Professor Muktar Atiku Kurawa stated this during the opening ceremony of the second edition of the university's staff Games 2025 organized by the sports directorate held at the institution playing pitch.

The vice chancellor who was represented by the deputy vice chancellor Administration, Professor Abubakar Salisu Garba said organizing such type of sporting competition will go along way in improving their healthy and sound in discharging the duty.

He said that the university's management will continue to support the sports directorate towards the overall development of various sporting activities in the institution.

The vice chancellor called on the participants not take the championship as a do or die affairs, charging the officiating officials to be free and fair throughout the events.

Speaking the university's Director of sports, Ahmad Surajo expressed gratitude to the management for their moral and financial support, assuring that the directorate will continue to do it's best towards the upliftment of various sporting activities in the university.

Ahmad Surajo called on the participants to give the organisers all the maximum support and cooperation for the success and hitch free competitions.

In the opening match played, Defending champion, Security Directorate football team lost to Directorate of Health 3-1 and VC's Office football team defeated Faculty of Humanity 7-1 in the second match.

Other events competing include Chess, table tennis, 100 metre athletics, egg and spoon race and football 6 Aside.

Kano Inaugurates High-powered Committee on Profiling of NGO's and Donor Organisations

In a decisive move to ensure the proper regulation, transparency, and alignment of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and donor organizations with the development priorities of Kano State, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) has inaugurated a High-Powered Committee on the Profiling of NGOs and Donor Organizations operating in Kano State.

In a statement signed by the Director Special Duties of the Ministry of Information z Sani Abba Yola, said Speaking at the inauguration, the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Faruk Ibrahim, underscored the vital contributions of NGOs and donor organizations in sectors such as health, education, agriculture, women and children development, and governance. However, he noted growing concerns over unregulated activities by some organizations, necessitating the establishment of a robust monitoring framework.

The SSG stated that the committee’s terms of reference include profiling all NGOs and donor organizations operating in Kano State, as well as investigating and documenting their sources of funding. It will also assess the nature of their activities, areas of intervention, and operational methods, with a view to recommending a regulatory framework that aligns NGO operations with the state’s vision and development goals. Furthermore, the committee will propose measures to ensure order and proper regulation in the use of civic space in Kano State.

He added that to effectively carry out its mandate, the committee has been granted the authority to shut down the offices of any organization found engaging in suspicious or unapproved activities and suspend the operations of any local or foreign organization linked to activities that contradict Kano’s moral and religious values. It also has the power to investigate the funding sources and operational methods of any organization, as well as receive and review complaints from the public regarding suspicious NGO activities. 

Additionally, the committee is empowered to lodge formal complaints with security agencies for further investigation and possible prosecution of any organization found to be engaging in dubious or unethical practices.

Umar Faruk Ibrahim explained that the committee comprises key government officials and representatives from civil society, security agencies, and relevant ministries. The Chairman of the committee is Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, while Mallam Tijjani Auwal, the Commissioner for Religious Affairs, serves as Vice Chairman. Other members include Air Commodore Salisu Yushu’u Abdullahi, Special Adviser on Joint Security Services; Mallam Ali Bichi, Special Adviser on Religious Affairs; Hon. Nasiru Isah Dikko (Jarma), Senior Special Assistant on NGOs; and Dr. Abba Sufi, Director General of the Hisbah Board. 

The committee also includes representatives from the Ministry of Women Affairs, Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Rural and Community Development, Ministry of Health, and Ministry of Local Government. Also represented are the Neighborhood Watch (Vigilante Group), the Nigeria Police Command, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Emirate Council, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), the National Human Rights Commission, and various religious groups, including Jama’atu Nasril Islam. Barr. Ibrahim Isa Wangida, a private legal practitioner, is also a member of the committee. 

The Co-Secretary of the committee is Sani Abba Yola, Director of Special Duties at the Kano State Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs, while AbdulMumin Ladan Ajumawa, Director of Development Support Coordination at MPB, serves as Secretary.

In his acceptance remarks on behalf of the committee members, the Chairman of the Committee and Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, expressed gratitude to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for the trust and confidence reposed in the committee members. He assured the state government that the committee would carry out its mandate with diligence, fairness, and an unwavering commitment to safeguarding the values and interests of the Kano people.

He emphasized that the committee would work tirelessly to ensure a transparent and accountable process in profiling NGOs and donor organizations, ensuring that their activities align with the state’s development agenda and moral principles. He also stressed the importance of collaborating with relevant stakeholders, including government agencies, security operatives, and civil society groups, to achieve the set objectives.

He reiterated that the committee would operate strictly within its terms of reference and ensure that only credible and law-abiding organizations are allowed to operate in the state.

DAM foundation and basketball development in Kano - By Ado Salisu

The resuscitation of the inter-tertiary institution basketball championship organised in collaboration with Dr. Abdullahi Mustapha (DAM) Foundation is a welcome development. for the advancement of the game and others in the country. 

DAM Foundation is powered by a veteran basketball player who is now the Director General of Energy Commission of Nigeria.

The contribution of the DAM Foundation gave impetus to the just concluded 1st Kanawa inter-tertiary institution basketball championship This is a sign of the restoration of the game of basketball and other games that have not been competed for in the not too distant past.

Indeed, the collaboration of Adam Foundation with other stakeholders in sports industry has gone far in complementing the efforts of Kano state government towards the overall development of various sporting events particularly basketball event in the state.

Been a home of basketball, following its track record and achievements recorded by the state darling team: Kano Pillars basketball team, which excelled in the 80s and upto 90s.

All these feats accomplished by the state, especially at grassroots and national levels, can be linked to the commitment and support from the relevant agencies and sponsors as well as the dedication from the players which enabled them to project the good image of the state.

In those days, a lot of competitions were organised by various sponsors in collaboration with the Kano state Basketball Association under which aegis many players were produced. Many of them went on to represent the state at national and international levels.

No doubt the Kofar Nassarawa basketball courts became the springboard for their successes by contributing positively to the horning of their skills, thus paving way for coaches to recruit hidden talented players during local tournaments.

Those frequent inter Tertiary institutions and secondary schools basketball championships produced players like Sani Ahmad, Aminu Datti, Rabiu Tukur, Muktar Adamu Khalid, Ado Wayo, Alto, Sanbo Yusuf, Ali Muhammad Ali and many others.

Some of them, who featured as products of Kano Pillars basketball team were invited and played for the national basketball team. Others have been privileged to secure places in foreign clubs in Angola and United States of America among others countries.

The resuscitation of the inter Tertiary institution basketball competition now is a clear indication that the game will certainly restore it lost glory in the state.

However, there is the need for multi corporate organisations and wealthy individuals to complement Kano state government efforts in supporting sports generally as government along cannot shoulder all the responsibilities of re-energizing the game.

No doubt, this synergy between the state government and good spirited sports lovers will go a long way in moving the game and others like it forward. This is considering the fact that sports has been playing key role in cementing the cordial relationship and unity between various ethnic groups. Overall, all these add up to projecting the good image of the state and the country at large.

The spirit and letter of the resuscitation was exhilarating. It witnessed the convergence of veteran basketball players such as the Vice Chancellor of Khalifa Isyaku Rabiu university, KHAIRUN, Professor Abdulrashid Garba, the former Vice Chancellor of Northwest University, Professor Mustapha Isa, hitherto national team coaches: Scott Nnaji and Sani Ahmad; former administrators: the Vice Chancellor of Baba Ahmad University, Professor Idris Tanko, the chairman of technical committee of the Nigerian University Games Association, NUGA, Professor Musa Garba Yakasai AA, the former Registrar of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil and member governing council, Dr. Aminu Bello Dan Iyan Makaman Kano, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Northwest University, Professor Abubakar Salisu Garba and the director of sports BUK, Professor Rabiu Muhammad popularly known as Chanhu.

Speaking at the final, a coordinator of DAM Foundation, Abdulmajid Abdullahi expressed gratitude to all those who have contributed in one way or the other towards the success of the tournament.

Abdullahi assured that the foundation will continue to partner with relevant stakeholders with the aim to develop the game in the state and the country in general.

In his remarks, the coordinator of the championship, Sanusi Shuaibu Badway, thanked the sponsors and the participants for their commitment towards the success of the event.

Meanwhile, BUK basketball team emerged the overall winner after beating its Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology Wudil 49-20 points to go home with a giant trophy and one hundred thousand naira, while runners up went home with the second trophy and seventy thousand naira only.

Northwest University Kano took the third place prize with a trophy and fifty thousand naira and KHAIRUN won the most disciplined team while Abubakar Muhammad of BUK win the Most Valuable Player MVP.

It is on this note that the DAM Foundation deserves commendation for its commitment and support to the revitalization as well as gingering of the younger generation of basketballers in the state.

Kano Govt Comdemns APC's Plan for Shadow Govt, Describes it as Illegal and Political Desperation

The recent statement credited to the National Chairman of the APC Patriotic Volunteers, Alhaji Usman Alhaji, announcing the group’s intention to form a shadow government in Kano State, is not only a desperate and politically motivated scheme but also a dangerous move with serious social and legal implications for the entire state and Nigeria’s democratic system.

Let me remind these elements within the Kano APC that, in a democratic system like ours, forming a government within a government is entirely illegal and unconstitutional. A shadow government, as practiced in the United Kingdom, exists within a parliamentary system where opposition parties appoint "shadow ministers" to scrutinize the ruling government. However, Nigeria operates a presidential system, which neither recognizes nor supports such a structure outside the institutional framework of the law.

Democracy does not permit anyone to lose their sense of judgment simply because they have lost relevance within their party’s political structure. Therefore, the right to freedom of expression does not grant anyone the liberty to make reckless statements or take actions that undermine constitutional governance and the sovereignty of an elected government.

Contemplating the formation of a shadow government is further proof of the APC’s continued plot to destabilize Kano State and create chaos. Such actions will not be tolerated by the Kano State Government. The government stands ready to take decisive action against any individual or group involved in acts capable of disturbing the relative peace in the state, regardless of their social status or perceived political influence, in accordance with the laws of Kano State and Nigeria.

It is on record that the APC, as a party in Kano State, has lost its political relevance and influence. This latest move by some self-deceiving elements only confirms the APC’s desperation to remain relevant after its overwhelming rejection at the polls. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration was duly elected by the good people of Kano State and has, within a short period, recorded remarkable achievements in developmental projects and policies aimed at improving the lives of the people.

The NNPP-led government in Kano State, under the visionary leadership of Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf, remains the most focused state government in the country, with clearly defined goals in key sectors. In education, it has allocated the highest budgetary resources in the country, ensuring significant improvements in learning infrastructure and access to quality education. In healthcare, the government has made substantial investments in medical services and hospital infrastructure to improve public health outcomes. Infrastructure development has also been prioritized, with numerous projects aimed at transforming Kano State into a modern economic hub.

Furthermore, the administration is deeply committed to youth and women empowerment through various programs designed to provide economic opportunities and improve livelihoods. Efforts in poverty eradication have been intensified, ensuring that the most vulnerable citizens receive necessary support. Institutional reforms in governance have also been a major focus, with policies such as non-interference in the fight against corruption and an open procurement process that aligns with best practices in accountability, transparency, and openness. 

The administration has also taken steps to restore the integrity of the civil service and improve the welfare of government workers. Additionally, the periodic payment of gratuities and pensions for retirees who were previously neglected by the APC government—remains a top priority of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration.

The people of Kano State have embraced a government committed to good governance and sustainable development. No amount of political maneuvering or sinister plots can distract His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, from delivering the dividends of democracy to the good people of Kano State. The APC has been reduced to nothing more than a relic of history in the state.

Consequently, reckless and unconstitutional declarations will not change the reality that the APC has been rejected in Kano State. Instead of making self-deceiving threats, the APC Patriotic Volunteers should respect the democratic will of the people and allow Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration to continue delivering on its mandate.

Digital Literacy: AGILE Kano trains teachers on multimedia content development, remote learning

The Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) has organised training for teachers on multimedia content development to ensure effective implementation of digital literacy and remote learning in Kano state. 

The Project Coordinator Malam Mujtapha Aminu said the training marks an important milestone in an efforts to enhance digital literacy among adolescent girls.

He added that the training was specifically designed to equip teachers with the essential digital knowledge and skills required to effectively integrate technology into their instructional practices. 

"By doing so, we aimed to empower teachers to provide high-quality digital skills education to their students, particularly adolescent girls.

"In today's technology-driven world, digital skills are no longer a luxury, but a necessity. They are essential for personal, societal, and economic growth, enabling individuals to participate fully in the digital economy, improve productivity, and drive innovation.

"Through this training, we are committed to bridging the digital divide and ensuring that adolescent girls have equal access to digital opportunities. I am confident that, together, we can make a meaningful impact and empower the next generation of leaders," Aminu said.

Communication Officer, Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) Kano, Nasiru Yusuf Ibrahim, in a statement on Sunday in Kano, quoted the Project Coordinator as saying that the training would enhance the capability of participants to develop relevant digital content in line with 21st century teaching and learning requirements.

He noted that Kano needed a large pool of skilled educators with digital learning content development skills in order to ensure improved teaching and learning outcomes in schools across the state.

The Project Coordinator encouraged the trainees to actively participate in the training to enrich their skills and competencies in effectively creating educational content.

In his remarks the Component Lead Digital Literacy and Remote Learning Kano AGILE, Malam Ahmad Jibril said the participants mainly teachers from girls Senior Secondary Schools in the state, are expected to step down the training to other teachers. 

He revealed that in the first phase of the implementation year, 100 schools will benefit from the intervention that will support training of students.

The component lead recalled that in 2024 AGILE in collaboration with Federal Ministry of Education had trained 230 teachers on how to navigate some learning management systems. 

Jibril added that additional 200 schools will now benefit from the intervention in 2025 adding that 300 more teachers from various secondary schools across the 44 local governments areas of Kano state, will also be 

After the training, the teachers will be given access to content creation equipment to enable them record contents developed in various subject areas and hosted on cloud for access by students not only in Kano but also Nigeria and the globe in general," he said.

Jibril explained that students will be able to access lessons and study their subjects online during school period or even on vacation.

He highlighted that the new techniques will address challenges encountered during the COVID-19 pandemic that led to the closure of schools, emphasizing that such disruptions would not happen again. 

Jibril noted that with the current initiative, even if schools are closed due to holidays or any unavoidable circumstance, teaching continues uninterrupted.

He explained that teachers can record their lessons and upload them to the internet, allowing students to download and watch them at their convenience.

He directed the participants to the Nigeria Learning Passport, an E learning platform of UNICEF in collaboration with Federal Ministry of Education.

He revealed that teachers are allowed to upload their educational contents to these platforms as long as they meet the specified requirements.

In her presentation the lead facilitator Samira Usman Adam exposed participants to different applications for mobile recording and editing. 

A participant, Musa Dan Azumi Muhammad pledged to apply the skills learnt to improve their teaching processes. 

He said that the training will promote girl child education, particularly in rural and semi urban areas.

A total of 40 master trainers were selected from different schools across the 44 local government areas of Kano state for the training.

Kano Information Commissioner Condoles with Danzago Family Over Demise of Renowned Politician and Businessman

Kano state commissioner of information and internal affairs Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya has paid condolences visit to the family of Late Alhaji Amadu Haruna Danzago over the death of the renowned politician and businessman.

During the visit on Saturday evening, the commissioner described the death as a great loss to Kano, business community and Nigeria as a whole.

He said, Dazago's death has created a wide vacuum in Nigerian politics, and the business community due to his active role in shaping governance and entrepreneurship development.

He urged politicians to emulate the leadership qualities of Late Danzago' who before his death served as managing Director Kano Refuse management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB)

Students have been urged to utilize their potential skills both academically and sporting events in order to actualize their set objectives in life.

The Vice chancellor of Khalifa Isyaku Rabiu university KHAIRUN, Professor Abdulrashid Garba made the call during the on going 1st Kanawa Tertiary institution basketball championship semi- final between Bayero university Kano BUK and KHAIRUN' held at BUK old site basketball court.

Professor Abdulrashid Garba who described sports nowaday as a lucrative venture and at the same time use it to unite different ethnic groups for the development of the country.

The vice chancellor charged the students to exhibits sportsmanship as both players were brothers.

While expressing gratitude to the sponsors of the tournament, he called on other wealthy individuals and corporate organisations to contribute their quota towards the overall development of various sporting events in higher institutions and the country at large.

"Honestly speaking I'm really impress with the general organisation of the championship and we hope this kind of tournament will be sustain quarterly or annually so as it will keep the students to develop their skills," he explained.

In the first semi final played Bayero university Kano BUK hammered KHAIRUN 60-13 points. With this victory, BUK has qualified for the final of the championship scheduled to hold tomorrow Saturday at the same venue.
