Kano State Takes Bold Step with New Climate Change Policy to Combat Environmental Challenges

The Kano State Executive Council has approved a comprehensive Climate Change Policy Framework to address environmental degradation and climate change.

This was contained in a statement issued by the governor's spokesperson Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa on Friday.

Championed by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the policy aims to protect public health, reduce emissions, and foster sustainable economic growth.  

Presented by Dr. Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, Commissioner for Environmental and Climate Change, the framework targets key sectors like Agriculture, Energy, Health, Transport, Education, and Urban Development.

Dr. Hashim emphasized its focus on local solutions, global partnerships, and access to climate funds. 

“This policy responds to daily climate challenges and aligns with global best practices,” he said.  

The policy focuses on reducing emissions through renewable energy, protecting vulnerable communities, promoting public participation, and ensuring gender-inclusive climate actions.

Governor Yusuf described it as central to his administration’s agenda for economic resilience and inclusive growth. “It’s about securing a sustainable future for all residents,” he stated.  

The policy also positions Kano State to attract international support and funding, strengthening its role as a regional leader in climate action. 

Dr. Hashim highlighted its role as a roadmap for a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy. “It will guide us in creating a sustainable future,” he added.  

Kano State’s adoption of this policy sets an example for other regions, demonstrating that local solutions and global collaboration can drive meaningful climate action.  

Kano: Gov. Yusuf Mulls Partnership with Neitherland Government on Food Security, Climate Change

Kano state governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf has sought for a diplomatic support of the Kingdom of Neitherlands to accelerate agricultural production and mitigation on the impact of climate change in the state. 

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf disclosed the proposed diplomatic synergy with the Dutch government on Tuesday when he played host to Ms Eva De Wit, First Secretary Migration at the Embassy of the Kingdom of Neitherlands in Nigeria. 

A statement by Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, the spokesperson to the Governor, said Governor Yusuf emphasized the impact driven landmark the Kingdom has recorded on agriculture and climate change in Europe. 

According to the release, Governor Yusuf who was passionate with the astronomical rate of agricultural development in Neitherland, expressed his administration's willingness to cement partnership for replication of the recipe in Kano. 

Yusuf has taken the opportunity of the diplomatic visit to roll out some of the initiative anchored by his administration to refocus the productivity of youth population in Kano and food security. 

While intimating the Dutch delegation the level of devastating indices of drug abuse inherited from the immediate past administration, Governor Yusuf said 24 skill acquisition centres have been reopened to gainfully empower the youth. 

Yusuf added that his government has also reformed and rehabilitated about 713 youth who engaged themselves in thuggery activities through concerted collaboration with the Nigerian Police to curb restiveness in the state. 

On her part, Ms De Wit who was also accompanied by the Chief of Mission, International Organization for Migration, Mr. Laurent De Boeck pledged to collaborate with Kano state government in the areas of youth empowerment, food security and climate change.
