Kano Anti-Corruption Commission Cracks Down on Land Racketeering Syndicate, Including Security Agents

The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC) has dismantled a syndicate involved in land racketeering, implicating security agents and government officials in the illegal activities.

PCACC Chairman, Barrister Muhuyi Magaji Rimingado, disclosed this during a town hall meeting organized by the commission on Tuesday. He reaffirmed the commission’s resolve to prosecute those found guilty, regardless of their influence or status.

Syndicate’s Modus Operandi

Rimingado revealed that the syndicate operated in collaboration with officials from the Ministry of Land and Physical Planning, security personnel, judicial staff, and officials from the Ministry of Justice. The group reportedly stole original land documents, replaced them with forged ones, and used these fraudulent documents to claim ownership of lands.

“These individuals colluded to manipulate court processes by presenting fake documents as evidence and obtaining court orders to legitimize their claims. In some cases, they even fabricated fire incidents to obtain fake certifications from the fire service, further deceiving the courts,” he explained.

He emphasized that the commission has exposed several of these fraudulent schemes and vowed to bring all culprits to justice. “No one involved in this crime, regardless of their position, will be spared,” Rimingado asserted.

Public Sensitization Efforts

The PCACC chairman also stressed the importance of educating the public about corruption, noting that town hall meetings serve as a platform to enlighten citizens. Reflecting on his decade of leadership at the commission, Rimingado said, “We have faced numerous challenges, but our commitment to fighting corruption remains unwavering.”

Stakeholder Support

The event saw notable figures commending the PCACC for its efforts. Justice Dije Aboki, represented by Barrister Mustapha Hassan Muhammad, lauded the commission’s fight against corruption and pledged continued judicial support. Similarly, Abba El-Mustapha, Executive Secretary of the Kano State Film Censorship Board, praised the commission and assured that the Kannywood industry would continue to raise awareness about the dangers of corruption.

Recognition and Awards

As part of the event, the commission recognized individuals and organizations contributing to the fight against corruption. Justice Dije Aboki was honored with the Integrity Award and named Anti-Corruption Icon of the Year. Other awardees included:

ACP Sulaiman Aliyu Gusau, CSP Sunday Ekwe, and CSP Nasir Gusau for their exceptional service.

Salisu T. Balarabe and Barrister Rabi Ibrahim Waya for their dedication to integrity.

Auwal Dankode, an aviation worker who found and returned $10,000, received a cash prize of ₦100,000.

Abba El-Mustapha for his outstanding contributions.

Additional Highlights

The event also featured the distribution of school bags to over 150 pupils who missed out during the previous week’s anti-corruption day celebration, as directed by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Kano-ACReSAL Opens Bids for Bulbula-Gayawa Gully Erosion Control Project

The Kano State Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project has taken a significant step forward in addressing gully erosion challenges by opening bids for the Bulbula-Gayawa erosion control initiative.

The bid opening session, held today at the State Project Management Unit (SPMU) Conference Hall, was overseen by the State Project Coordinator, Dr. Dahir Muhammad Hashim. The process ensured transparency as bids were unsealed and read aloud in the presence of company representatives, SPMU staff, and media personnel.

In his remarks, Dr. Hashim reaffirmed Kano-ACReSAL's commitment to fairness, assuring all participants of an impartial and transparent evaluation process. 

He emphasized that the outcomes would be handled with integrity to ensure the selection of a capable contractor for the project.

A representative of the bidding firms lauded the Kano State Government for its proactive measures in tackling erosion issues. He also expressed gratitude to Kano-ACReSAL for the opportunity to participate in the competitive bidding process. The representative pledged his firm’s readiness to deliver high-quality work that aligns with the project’s technical specifications and guidelines.

The Bulbula-Gayawa gully erosion control project is expected to mitigate environmental degradation and improve the livelihoods of residents in the affected areas.

Khalifa Isyaku Rabiu University, Kano (KHAIRUN) has organized a public lecture titled “World University Ranking Bodies: How Do They Work and How Do You Get Ranked?” held at its campus.

 A statement signed by KHAIRUN's head of corporate affairs and marketing department, Bilal Dahiru Tijjani said the event was attended by the staff, students, and representatives from sister universities to discuss critical insights into the global university ranking system.

In his welcome address, KHAIRUN’s Registrar, Malam Yusuf Datti, highlighted the significance of the seminar’s topic, urging attendees to actively engage and ask questions for better understanding.

Cabinet Rejig: Decision taken in good faith, best interest of Kano', Says Gov. Yusuf

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has again, dismissed untowards perception on the recent cabinet reshuffle that affected the office of the Chief of Staff, Secretary to the State Government and Five Commissioners. 

Addressing journalists Wednesday during the state executive council meeting held at Government house, Governor Yusuf specifically refuted political insinuation being attached to the major cabinet shake up. 

In a state issued by Governor's spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, Governor Yusuf who used the opportunity to debunk misrepresentation of government action, insisted the rejig was taken in good faith and in the best interest of Kano. 

" In recent times, we made some decisions in the administration, including cabinet reshuffle. As a result of this action, some lost their positions in the cabinet while some reassigned to serve in another capacity. Let me remind the public that the action taken was in the best interest of the people of Kano". Governor Yusuf added. 

In the release, Governor Yusuf stressed that the need to drop some commissioners became pertinent to inject renewed energy that will strengthen policies of government. 

Gov. Yusuf added that NNPP administration has pledged to deliver dividend of democracy, noted the urgency to effectively execute it's campaign promises equally neccesitated the replacement in the cabinet. 

With the appointment of new seven commissioners who were recently screened and cleared by the state assembly, Governor Yusuf stressed that the cabinet is reinvigorated with fresh ideas to turn around social and infrastructural development of the state. 

Although, the Governor notified those that were dropped from the state executive council would not be distanced from the administration, he assured of their reappointment to serve the state in another capacity. 

"We have promised to deliver dividend of democracy to our people. Unfortunately we are already short of time to deliver what we promises. So, we need to effect changes to speed up in good time. We have reshuffled the cabinet in order to improve the system. 

"Let me also say that we have not dropped those affected for life. We have other jobs for them, so I want everybody to accept the decision the way it is. As for those that were reassigned, we urged them to bring their previous experiences to bear in their new places of work". Governor said. 

Meanwhile, Governor Yusuf announced that the new commissioners would join the next executive council meeting and thier respective portfolios would be annouced.

2024 International Anti-corruption Day: We give free hands to Kano Anti-gratf Commission -Gov. Yusuf

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has firmly stated that his administration maintains a hands-off approach regarding the activities of the State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission. 

In a statement issued by the Governor's spokesperson, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf emphasized that his government has never interfered with the commission’s investigations, reiterating its commitment to fairness and impartiality in the fight against corruption.

Speaking at the 2024 International Anti-Corruption Day event held at the Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano, Governor Yusuf reassured the public of his administration’s determination to uphold the integrity and independence of the anti-corruption agency.

"My administration has given the State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission a free hand to carry out its duties without fear, favor, or interference," the governor declared. 

"We are committed to supporting the agency in its efforts to eliminate corruption and ensure accountability in governance."

Governor Yusuf described corruption as a “cancer” that destroys public trust, weakens institutions, and impedes progress.

He stressed the need for a collective resolve to eradicate it and called on all stakeholders to play their part in building a transparent and accountable society.

In his speech, the governor unveiled several new initiatives aimed at strengthening anti-corruption efforts in Kano State.

These include the introduction of the Central Criminal Register Software, the Kano Integrated Governance and Accountability System (KIGAS), and the Open Government Partnership (OGP) Action Plan for 2024–2026.

He also commended the leadership of the commission, headed by Barr. Muhuyi Magaji Rimin-Gado, for its professionalism and dedication.

 "The commission has done a commendable job in drafting the proposed Crime Bill to ensure recovered assets are transparently managed for the benefit of the state," the governor added.

Kano’s Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Haruna Isa Dederi, echoed the governor’s sentiments, noting that the anti-corruption commission has excelled due to the administration’s full support and non-interference.

The chairman of the commission, Barr. Muhuyi Magaji Rimin-Gado, expressed gratitude for the governor’s unwavering support. 

He noted that the event, initially planned for December 9, was postponed to accommodate the governor’s schedule and align with his commitment to good governance.

 "My position about the creation of NSC in the last 48 years is that, we have been changing names moving from Ministry of Sports to NSC, changing nomenclature back and forth. 

At some point it was ministry of education information, culture and sports in the last 48 years.

That brings the question, what do we went to do with sports in Nigeria, are we ready to develop sports in this country, if we are ready, it doesn't come by changing names.

Whenever there's a failure we remember, let's change to Sports Commission, Anytime there's failure again, we say put sports under Sports Ministry.

The matter is not by charging names, the real issue about sports in Nigeria is squarely Corruption. Change names one million times we still go back to were we are years back.

Appoint people with integrity, transparency, appoint people without a bad past. But when government keep recycling people that lack meaningful track record, integrity and good governance, we shall keep roaming in a circle and nothing will be achieved".

Talking about NSC, the question is, when was the act signed?

There's an ongoing debate on whether the NSC act is legal or not.

The former Chairman of Sports in the Senate Obinna Ogba was the one who spearheaded the act. And far as I am concerned, the NSC act was the worst ever seen, because the content was wrong, fraudulent and was designed to bring back friends and relatives.the documents is totally faulty and need to be reworked."

"I remember in 2021 the National Assembly transmitted the bill to Mr. President Buhari for his ascent.

The President didn't give his ascent, and you know when such happenes, the Senate retrieves the bill and approves it after number of weeks.

But president Buhari later signed the NSC act on the 25 the of May 2023, four days before his exit from office. After signing the bill some people took it and hid it inside their drawer without formal announcement.

When did they bring back the NSC act, after the Sports Ministry has failed?

On Ese Brume, "Training grants to Ese Brume was not planned but, NSC waited for Brume to get accident before giving her training grant. Secondly, training grant to Brume is not a favour but her right. Have NSC given other AthIetes?

Now, sports all over the world is driven by Corporate Business Entities. Check, only in Nigeria you have government pumping money into sports and have people stealing it without accountability and government does nothing about it.

"In the history of Nigeria, No President had pumped money into sports like President Bola Ahmed Tinubu did. Where did he get the money having gone borrowing, raising taxes bills which means, the president means well for Nigerian Sports.

President Tinubu released N24 billion to sports in one year. Where are those who managed it? Some of them were assigned to other ministry to go and hide while others are roaming the street enjoying their loot.

So, we have to show accountability, transparency and good governance.

No corporate body would put money into Nigerian Sports, the Shehu Dikko who is talking went to the Nigeria Stock exchange to do the symbolic Ringing of Bell with Amaju Pinnic promising heaven on earth to the Nigeria sports and later, they disappeared, which means there's a trust deficit in Nigeria Sports.

Mobil was sponsoring AthIetics, Coca-cola sponsored Tennis. Glo, MTN doing sports business in Nigeria, no one is asking why is Super Sports no longer in sports in Nigeria?

These corporate bodies pulled out because no accountability.

In Nigeria today, no one has been taken to prison for stealing money in sports.

Adedipe, Bamimore emerge top winners of 2024 NLNG Golf Classic Invitational

The 2024 edition of the NLNG Golf Classic ended in Bonny, Rivers on Saturday with Oluwaseun Adedipe and Lady Kafayat Bamimore clinching the top prize in the men and ladies categories. 

The two-day NLNG Golf Classic Invitational sponsored by Nigeria LNG which was the fifth in the series, began on Friday morning with the tee-off ceremony at the Bonny Island Golf Club (BIGC).

The MD, Nigeria LNG, Dr Philip Mshelbila, was on ground, along with other dignitaries, including Engr Emmanuel Nnabuife, Production Trains Asset Manager, who represented the GM Production Nnamdi Anowi, Capt. Lawrence Chukwu, Terminal Manger, ⁠Dr. Sam Ekong, as well as BIGC Captain, Abubakar Hussaini and Lady Captain, Darlene Cobham, to grace the tee-off ceremony.

The annual golf competition, staged at the prestigious, serene, and lush green course of the BIGC, saw no fewer than 100 golfers competing for honours in the different categories.

At the end of hostilities however, Adedipe and Bamimore clinched the tournament’s top prizes as they emerged winners in the NLNG Men’s Division 1 (for handicap 0 to 18) and Ladies Division 1 Categories (for handicap 0 to 28) respectively.

Adedipe played a total gross score of 77, playing off handicap 10 and returned a net score of 67 to claim the men's top prize.

His closest challenger, Smart Tobin, who played a total of 82 gross with handicap 12, returned a net score of 70, beat BIGC Captain Abubakar Hussaini on count back to finish as first runner up.

While Hussaini played a total gross of 77, with handicap 7, and returned a net score of 70 to settle for the second runner-up position in the category.

An elated Adedipe told newsmen that even though he has won several trophies in BIGC, winning the NLNG trophy for the first time was such a sweet feeling.

"I have been in this game for more than 10 years. Golf is a game I love so much because it gives me joy.

"I am just delighted every time I am on the golf course because playing helps me relieve stress and so many other things.

"I have won several other trophies in BIGC, but this is the first time I am winning this particular trophy, having come close on several occasions.

"I won the men's best gross prize last year and also winning the men's longest drive this year, is an icing on the cake and makes the victory even more sweeter," he said.

In the Ladies Division 1 category, Bamimore, playing off handicap 28, posted a gross score of 100 and returned a net score of 72 to claim the ladies' top prize.

BIGC Lady Captain Darlene Cobham with a total gross of 101, playing off handicap 28 and returning a net score of 73 finished as first runner in the category.

While Nkechi Nwafor, playing off handicap 25, posted a total gross score of 100 and 75 net to settle for the second runner-up prize.

The BIGC best gross prize went to the BIGC Captain Abubakar Hussaini after he posted an impressive 77 gross. Former BIGC Lady Captain, Nnena Ahube, who just returned from Morocco, where she represented Nigeria in the All African Challenge Trophy, won the best gross in the ladies category.

It was a very close contest In the BIGC/NLNG Men's Division 2 category, as Oludare Oyegbami played a total gross score of 92, after playing off handicap 19 and returning a net score of 73 to beat BIGC Vice Captain, Michael Ukaegbu on count back.

Ukaegbu played a total gross score of 90, with handicap 17, and also returned a net score of 73 to beat Michael Igoni to the first runner-up spot.

While, Igoni settled for the second runner-up prize after he played a total of 94 gross, playing off handicap 21, and returned a net score of 73.

In the BIGC/NLNG Ladies Division 2 category, Bessie Obei, playing off handicap 33, played a total of 107 gross and 74 net to emerge winner.

Zuleihat Adedipe won the first runner-up prize after she played a total gross score of 108 with handicap 33 and returned a net score of 75 to beat Nkechi Leeb on count back.

In the BIGC/NLNG Men's Division 3 category, Ewache Iyoko, playing off handicap 25, played a total gross score of 97 and 72 net to emerge winner.

NLNG's Corporate Transformation (CT) Lead,Roland Guobadia, won the second runner-up prize after he played a total gross score of 102, playing off handicap 27 and returning a net score of 75.

Mfon Ekpo posted a total gross score of 101, playing off handicap 25, and returned a net score of 76 to settle for the second runner-up prize.

Akpan Emmanuel won the prize for the BIGC/NLNG Guest Men category after he played off handicap 10 and returned a gross score of 79 and 69 net.

Mustapha Hassan, playing off handicap 8, with a gross score of 80 and 72 net finished as first runner up, while Uche Isikaku, played a total gross score of 89 with handicap with handicap 16, returning a net score of 73 to settle for the second runner up spot.

Also, Juliet Friday won the prize for the BIGC/NLNG Guest Ladies category. This was after she played off handicap 15 and posted a gross across of 91 and a net score of 76.

Ochade Ajabor, playing off handicap 25 and returning a gross score of 104 and 79 net finished as first runner up, while Nkoyo Igunbor settled for the second runner up prize after beating Nkoyo Igunbor on count back.

There were also prizes for best veteran men, which was won by Omie Abbey with 99 gross and 79 net (handicap 20).

Abdu Musa with 108 gross and 80 net (handicap 28) won the runners-up position, while Chris Mbanefo (handicap 26), with 107 gross and 81 net, beat Karim on count back to settle for the second runner up position.

In the technical prizes category, the Straightest drive men prize went to Temitayo Ogundoju, while the straightest drive ladies' prize was won by Gladness Archibong (Lady Capt, calabar golf club)

Oluwaseun Adedipe took home the prize for the longest drive men's category, while the longest drive ladies' award went to Juliet Friday.

Dipo Adekoya smiled home with the nearest to the pin men's prize.

 A special plaque; a beautifully designed replica of the BIGC course was presented to Abdu Musa, a former NLNG employee in honour of his sentforth kitty which was organised by the BIGC shortly after his retirement.

In his remarks, Roland Guobadia, NLNG's Corporate Transformation (CT) Lead noted that the event was a special occasion for the NLNG which brings its stakeholders and partners from all over the country in an atmosphere of friendship and camaraderie to strengthen the bond and industry through the game of golf.

"Golf is a very unique sport as there are many benefits too numerous to mention that we get out of it.

"I believe golf has a special position within the context of the Nigeria LNG and our mission to help build a better Nigeria," he said.

The BIGC Captain, Abubakar Hussaini, expressed his gratitude to all the participants for honouring their invitation in spite of their busy schedule.

Hussaini noted that this year's edition was a special one as it marked NLNG's 25 years in operations and 30 years in existence.

Kano Ministry of Land Warns Against Unauthorized Land Deals

The Secretary of the Kano State Task Force on Development Control and Director of Admin and General Services of the Ministry of Land and Physical Planning has cautioned the public against purchasing unverified land in the state.

Speaking during a routine inspection of land activities in Katsinawa and Bachirawa areas of Ungogo Local Government, he disclosed that certain individuals were unlawfully subdividing and selling lands without government approval.

“We visited the location and discovered that suspected individuals involved in the illegal sale of lands had fled the area. However, we have taken measures to secure the site, including placing a notice board to alert the public to cease all dealings there immediately,” he stated.

He urged residents to exercise vigilance when purchasing land, emphasizing the need for proper verification. 

“Before purchasing any land, visit the Ministry of Land and Physical Planning or Kano State Urban Planning and Development Authority to confirm the authenticity of the documents presented to you. Many unsuspecting buyers have fallen victim to fraudulent transactions involving unapproved lands,” he warned.

The Secretary also reminded landowners to recertify their Certificates of Occupancy and other land titles as part of the ongoing recertification exercise initiated by Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf on November 25, 2024.
