Murtala Garo Urges Ex-Governors, Political Leaders to Join Forces for Kano's Growth and Prosperity

The Deputy Governorship Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 elections and former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Murtala Sule Garo, has called on Kano’s former governors and political leaders to set aside their differences and work together for the betterment of the state.

Speaking at a dinner and award night organized by the 8th, 9th, and 10th Kano State House of Assembly Forum, Garo emphasized the critical role unity among leaders can play in accelerating the state’s development.

He stated, “It is disheartening to see states like Zamfara—less developed than Kano—where former governors set aside their differences to attend events and contribute to the state’s progress. Here in Kano, former governors rarely come together to discuss and address issues affecting our state.”

Garo urged former governors to rise above political affiliations and personal differences, adding, “I am appealing to our former governors to collaborate and work closely for the singular goal of moving Kano forward. The collective effort of our leaders is essential to achieving the development our people deserve.”

He further stressed, “If they truly have the interest of Kano State at heart, I urge them to unite. Development cannot happen in isolation. Political leaders must demonstrate their commitment to the growth of our state by working hand in hand, regardless of political differences. Unity is the foundation for lasting progress, and this should be their priority.”

In recognizing the efforts of the event organizers, Garo commended the members of the House of Assembly Forum for their unity and stressed the importance of preserving it.

“I urge politicians to desist from actions that could disrupt the strong bond among the Assembly members. Instead, we should learn from their example. If such unity continues, I have no doubt that Kano will experience unprecedented progress,” he stated.

Murtala Sule Garo’s call for collaboration comes at a time when Kano State’s developmental needs require concerted efforts from leaders across political divides.

The event, attended by prominent party leaders and stakeholders, aimed to strengthen unity within the APC as it prepares for future electoral challenges.

Environment Staff Urges To Be More Committed To Duty - Dr. Dahir Hashim

The newly appointed Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change Dr. Dahir Muhammad Hashim has urged staff of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change to step up efforts to ensure no stone leave unturned to make Kano more cleaner and greener.

In a statement signed by the Director Public Enlightenment of the Ministry, Ismail Garba Gwammaja, said the Commissioner made the disclosure today while addressing the Monmouth crowd who accompanied him to his new office as a commissioner.

He expressed delight for the warm reception accorded him by the staff of the Ministry and pledged to operate an open door policy for maximum collaboration and synergy.

Dr. Hashim who earlier expressed his gratitude to Allah (SWA) for witnessing and achieving this milestone and commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for finding him worthy in this capacity and pledged to work assiduously towards achieving the organizational goals.

The Commissioner further enjoined the head of various departments to come up with a progress report and mandate of their departments for tracking purposes and way forward he stressed.

Earlier, the Ag. Permanent Secretary who doubled as Director Admin and General Services Adamu Fate Jigaware restated readiness and willingness of the Ministry staff to support the Commissioner to succeed in his mandate.

Also speaking are the Chairman Dala local government area Hon. Surajo Imam and the Chairman NNPP Dala Alh. Dayyabu Ahmed Maiturare among others.

400 Golfers Set for IBB International Golf, Country Club 26th Amateur Ladies Open

No fewer than 400 golfers from about 10 African countries are set to slug it out for honours in the 26th edition of the IBB Amateur Ladies Open in Abuja.

The tournament is scheduled to be held from Feb. 13 to Feb. 17 at the IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja. 

Dame Julie Donli, OON, the Lady Captain of the club told newsmen on Monday that this year's edition of the championship promises to be an Open to remember with the theme: "The Abuja Experience".

She said the Abuja experience would include city tour and cultural displays, adding that couture from northern Nigeria, as well as cuisines and delicacies that would captivate and impress guests would be displayed.

"All is now set for the Ladies Section of the IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja to host the 26th edition of the IBB Amateur Ladies Open.

"We are expecting no fewer than 400 golfers, ladies and gentlemen who will be playing as guests from within the country as well as from other African countries.

"It is going to be an Open to remember as we will be showcasing our culture, dressing, food, drink, music and a good taste of our hospitality, just as the theme goes, it's promises to be an "Abuja experience" indeed.

"We will be welcoming all our players in a special way and taking them on a tour around the city, which promises to be fun and exciting.

"The beautiful thing about the championship is that it starts on Valentine's Day, which is Feb. 14, so there's going to be so much love in the air," she said.

Donli said so far about 10 African countries had indicated interest in participating in the championship, with over 400 players expected from across the country and the rest of the world.

She listed some of the participating countries to include Uganda, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Botswana, Kenya, Rwanda, Cameroon, as well as hosts Nigeria.

The Lady Captain assured that everything had been put in place to ensure an exciting outing for all the participants, with several side attractions lined up for the five-day event.

She noted that the championship was important because it had the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), adding that the professionals would also take part in the tournament with so many mouth-watering prizes to be won.

"The championship will feature a female professionals tournament with a 5000 dollars prize money. 

"The Amateur championship boasts a return ticket to the UK, and an all-expense paid weekend stay at the Ibom Golf Resort in Uyo, along with other interesting prizes.

"It will be preceded by a caddies and course workers competition which is the first of its kind," she said.

Donli urged all interested participants to ensure that they registered on time so as not to be left out, adding that registration for the tournament would close on Jan. 24.

Schools Resumption: Monitoring Teams Report Good Turn Out of Teachers, Students in Kano

As Primary and Post Primary Schools resumed today Monday 6th January for the commencement of second term 2025 academic session in Kano, schools monitoring teams have reported good turn out of teachers and students from the various schools visited.

A statement signed by the Director Public Enlightenment Kano State Ministry of Education Balarabe Abdullahi Kiru explained that teachers, students and pupils were met present in most of the schools as early as 7:30am.

" From the report we have, the turn out of both teachers and students is satisfactory, schools have opened as early as 7:30am - 8:00am with absenteeism recorded in few schools.

"Teachers make early preparation of their lesson plan, keep their schools premises cleaned for the smooth commencement of the second term academic session" said the statement.

The statement added that the State Commissioner of Education Dr. Ali Haruna Makoda while appreciating the turn out, urged Principals and Head Teachers to put more efforts in ensuring that they maintain the tempo.

Dr. Ali Makoda further thanked parents and guardians for their cooperation which he said is contributing to the government effort in boosting the standard of education to achieve better performance of the children.

He however reiterated commitment of the present administration in initiating more programs aimed at promoting access to quality education, calling on all teaching staff to equally work as a team to deliver what is expected from them.

It is a tradition during the first day of the schools resumption, management of the state ministry of education and its parastatals including the Commissioner, the Permanent Secretary Directors and Deputy Directors embark on schools assessment monitoring exercise with a view to ensuring good performance.

Kano: Governor Yusuf Accepts Resignation of Commissioner for Project Monitoring and Evaluation

The Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has accepted the resignation of Engr. Muhammad Diggol, the Honourable Commissioner for the Ministry of Project Monitoring and Evaluation, with immediate effect.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Governor’s Spokesperson, Mr. Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, on Sunday.

Engr. Muhammad Diggol was initially appointed as Commissioner for Transportation at the inception of Governor Yusuf’s administration in 2023. 

He was later reassigned to the Ministry of Project Monitoring and Evaluation, where he served until his resignation today.

Governor Yusuf expressed his gratitude to Engr. Diggol for his selfless service, unwavering commitment, dedication, and exemplary work ethic during his tenure as a member of the State Executive Council.

According to the statement, the Governor also extended his best wishes to Engr. Diggol in his future endeavours.

The inclusion of contemporary practices alongside age-old traditions reflects the evolving nature of these celebrations. For instance, it has become customary for families to incorporate medical reports as a prerequisite for the marriage. This practice ensures the health and well-being of the couple, aligning with modern health awareness trends.

Additionally, the preparation and distribution of elegant invitation cards have become a standard practice. These cards, often beautifully designed, serve as formal announcements and tokens of the joyous event, inviting friends, associates and relatives to partake in the celebration. Rep Abubakar Kabir Abubakar Supports Bichi Indigent Students with Over ₦9 Million for Science and Technical Boarding School Resumption

On Saturday, the Kabir Abubakar Bichi Foundation, under the chairmanship of Dr. Habibu Usman Abdu, inaugurated the support of a 20 thousand Naira stipend each to students who are indigenes of Bichi. The event was held at FCE T Bichi.

It's a tradition maintained by Rep Abubakar Kabir Abubakar to support indigent students from Bichi when they return to boarding school during every term and after vacation.

In his remarks during the occasion, Rep Abubakar Kabir Abubakar urged the students to dedicate themselves to their studies and pledged to continue helping them.

Abubakar Kabir Abubakar said very soon he will renovate 8 secondary schools in his constituency and pledged to sponsor indigenes of the area, mostly women, to Egypt and Saudi Arabia for their tertiary education.

"Our aim is to ensure we get more engineers and doctors, and the renovation of the schools is to make sure students and pupils are not sitting on the floor. We don't want to see any roof wiped out from classes, and the hostels renovated because the dignity of students is to make sure they sleep comfortably," said Rep Bichi.

Rep Bichi said the federal government has also allocated over 1.5 billion for the renovation of Dawakin Tofa Science College and GSS Bichi will also be renovated. He noted that Dan Cin Cin Secondary School is also included.

Rep Bichi added that Hagagawa Primary School will be reconstructed in such a way that it will compete with all the private schools where sons of politicians are attending. He noted that six more primary schools will also be renovated, including Chiranchi and Sabonlayi. "We don't want to play politics with education; that is why we are inviting all and sundry to come and help us in uplifting education in the state," he said.

According to him, apart from 106 teachers manning schools in the area, they have employed 200 more teachers in Bichi, and their screening will soon start. "We are doing this because we have a scarcity of teachers," he added.

He also thanked members of the committee for the disbursement of scholarships and their dedication to education.

The conglomeration of students, which included both male and female, thanked Rep Abubakar Kabir Abubakar for the gesture.

Governor Yusuf Makes Fresh Appointments, to Swear in New Commissioners Monday

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved a series of strategic appointments aimed at strengthening his administration’s delivery of good governance.

In a statement issued by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the appointments, which take immediate effect, include Hon. Ahmad Muhammad Speaker as Special Adviser on Publicity. 

Hon. Ahmad brings a wealth of experience, having served three terms as Chairman of Dawakin Tofa Local Government and as the former APC State Organizing Secretary.

The Governor also named Engr. Ahmad as Special Adviser on Works, signaling a renewed focus on infrastructure development.

Additionally, Malam Sani Abdullahi Tofa was appointed Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Duties. 

A highly respected figure, Malam Sani Tofa has served as a Khadi of the Sharia Court in Kano and Abuja, a retired Permanent Secretary in the Kano State Civil Service, and a former Director General of the Kano State Shari’a Commission.

Similarly, the Governor also appointed Hon. Ibrahim Jibrin Fagge as Chairman, Local Government Service Commission and Hajia Ladidi Ibrahim Garko as Chairman, Kano State Civil Service Commission.

The two appointees were the immediate past Commissioners of Finance and Tourism respectively.

The statement further revealed that the Governor has scheduled the swearing-in ceremony for Monday, 6th January 2025 at 11:00 AM in the Ante-Chamber of the Kano Government House. 

The ceremony will also include the inauguration of seven commissioner nominees recently screened by the Kano State House of Assembly, as well as all newly appointed Special Advisers.

These appointments underscore Governor Yusuf’s commitment to assembling a competent team to drive the state’s development agenda.
