The appointment, announced on Monday, is seen as a strategic move by the Tinubu administration to inject youthful innovation and technical depth into the country’s electricity regulatory framework.

Engr. Ramat, a highly accomplished engineer and governance expert, brings with him a wealth of experience in public sector innovation, digital transformation, and strategic regulatory leadership.

Chess For Social Impact celebrates International Chess Day with Fundraiser for Nigeria's chess prodigy Olisa

To mark International Chess Day, Chess for Social Impact, a flagship of Mendlife Global Foundation, on Sunday, hosted the Abuja Elite Chess Meetup, blending competition with a fundraiser for Nigeria’s rising chess star, Tennyson Olisa.

The event, held at Cafe One, Sterling Bank Plaza, Abuja brought together top players, enthusiasts, and philanthropists to support chess as a tool for unity and empowerment.

This year’s theme, “Every Move Counts,” reflected the game’s strategy and the importance of each step in a young athlete’s journey.

Founder Oto-obong Mendie (Cassandra) said the event was more than a tournament; it was about transformation through chess.

“We are here to celebrate chess as a force for change. This year, our focus is on helping Tennyson Olisa, who’s making Nigeria proud,” she said.

Tennyson needs support for his journey to the FIDE Grand Swiss in Uzbekistan and the World Cup in India — a trip requiring around ₦54 million in total.

The costs include visa travel to Egypt, flights, coaching, training, media, and hospitality. Mendie said Nigeria must give him a strong presence globally.
Tennyson, 22, from Delta State, recently qualified for the prestigious FIDE Grand Swiss but faces serious financial hurdles.

“His journey highlights the struggles gifted Nigerian players face. He has the talent and heart — now he needs support,” Mendie added.

His elder brother and manager, Engr. Anthony Olisa, said the event aimed to give Tennyson greater visibility and attract sponsors.

Tennyson began playing chess at 13. His family supported him early, recognizing his talent and potential to achieve greatness.

“He’s doing amazing things for Nigeria and is now among Africa’s best. He’ll represent us globally,” Anthony said.

He added, “This event helps us showcase him and, by God’s grace, find more sponsors for his journey.”

Anthony appealed to sponsors to support Tennyson’s dreams, saying he urgently needs opportunities to grow.

The Nigeria Chess Federation’s Vice President, Adeyinka Adewole, said they fully back Tennyson and believe in his abilities.

“This will be his first major international outing. It’s a dream come true for any young player,” Adewole said.

Adewole added that the federation, the National Sports Commission, and Nigerians are united behind Tennyson’s mission.

Mr. Ezekiel Bankole Ipinlaiye the managing director of Prog Loyd Realtors Limited also urged the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori, along with private and corporate sponsors, philanthropists, and well-meaning Nigerians, to support the chess prodigy.

He noted that Tennyson, a proud indigene of Delta State, has won numerous medals for the state and is poised to bring honour and pride to Nigeria on the global stage.

The Abuja event included a blitz tournament, exhibition match, and mentorship session where Tennyson played seven elite players simultaneously.

A silent auction of chess-themed artwork also raised money for his trip, coaching, and accommodation.

Tennyson, visibly emotional, thanked supporters. “Representing Nigeria has always been my dream. I’ll give my all,” he said.

Dignitaries, diplomats, business leaders, and former champions attended, pledging their support for the young chess star.
The foundation raised over ₦5 million during the event — nearly halfway to the ₦54 million target.

International Chess Day, celebrated on July 20, was established by FIDE to promote chess and its educational value.

In Nigeria, the day is gaining traction, with more grassroots and youth programs emerging nationwide.

As the event ended, Mendie encouraged Nigerians to back young talents across fields.

“Every move counts — on the board and in life. Together, we can lift our youth to greatness,” she said.

Chess for Social Impact plans to continue fundraising through online campaigns and partnerships in the coming weeks.

Nigerians at home and abroad are urged to support Tennyson as he prepares for a global stage.

Highlight of the event was the presentation of prizes to the top three winners of the tournament, along with awards to sponsors and patrons of the foundation.

Mr. Victor Okoye, Vice Chairman of FCT SWAN and an Editor with the News Agency of Nigeria, one of the awardees, was honoured with a Patron of Chess for Social Impact award in recognition of his significant contributions to promoting the foundation's activities in the media.

Utopia Bath, Kitchen Shines as Top Exhibitor at Africa International Housing Show in Abuja

Utopia Bath and Kitchen, a leading provider of premium bathroom and kitchen solutions, emerged as the top exhibitor at the 2025 Africa International Housing Show (AIHS), held in Abuja.

The company captivated audiences with its sleek product designs, cutting-edge technology, and commitment to sustainable living.

The Africa International Housing Show (AIHS) has been described as the best in Africa in terms of Calibre of Participants, Exhibitors, Government Agencies, Real Estate Brokers and Professionals which are drawn annually from not less than 20 Countries.
Held annually, the AHIS is the continent’s largest housing and construction event, drawing thousands of stakeholders from across Africa and beyond, including developers, architects, policymakers, and investors.

This year’s event which held from July 27 to Aug. 1 focused on innovation, affordability, and sustainability in the housing sector.
Utopia Bath and Kitchen’s exhibition booth was a centerpiece of the show.

With its immersive product displays and live demonstrations, the brand showcased an impressive range of smart bathroom fixtures, modular kitchen systems, water-saving technologies, and luxury fittings tailored for the African market.

“Our vision is to transform everyday spaces into extraordinary experiences,” said Dr. Lami Ahmed, the sole representative of Utopia Bath and Kitchen in Nigeria.

“Being recognized as the top exhibitor at AIHS is a reflection of our commitment to excellence, innovation, and meeting the evolving needs of our customers.”

Amina Muhammed, the General Manager of Utopia Bath and Kitchen, Nigeria said the brand was so excited to be exhibiting at this year's AHIS, adding that visitors to Utopia’s booth were sure to have an unforgettable experience.

"Whether you are a developer, interior designer or a home owner, Utopia Bath and Kitchen offers you innovative designes to will help transform your space.

"Visitors to our booth are sure to experience the blend of quality and affordable luxury" she said.

Mobin Mohammed, Utopia’s Business Development Manger urged customers to visit the company's showroom at Wildot plaza, plot 903, obafemi awolowo way, Utako District, Abuja.

He noted that Utopia Bath and Kitchen is a leading manufacturer of complete bathroom solutions with its entire range manufactured under the strict norms of WRAS of the UK and a comprehensive guarantee provided on all its products.

"Thanks to Dr Lami Ahmed who brought the brand into Nigeria in 2022, this has been our first franchise showroom and right now, we are building about three other showrooms in the country in Enugu, Port Harcourt and Lagos.

"We offer a lifetime warranty on our products. For instance, on the ceramics, we offer 25 years warranty and on the tapware, we offer 12 years warranty," he said.

Industry experts praised Utopia’s products for their elegant design, durability, and eco-conscious features.

Joy Sani, CEO of Joytivity Studio and an interior designer said the Utopia Bath and Kitchen brand was

"I personally like to go with brands like this when it comes to bathroom fittings because you are sure that is a brand you can trust.

"If you are buying from the open market, you can't really trust consistency. For instance, when you buy the plumbing fittings, it's not just about the esthetics.

"You have esthetic products like these that are three times cheaper, but when it comes to flushing systems, that is when you will know how good and qualitative the Utopia Bath and Kitchen brand really is.

"Some of the other products in the open market always tend to ware off and change colour over time, but when you go with a brand such as Utopia which I have personally used before and can trust, then you will always want to stick with it.

"It's also very easy to trust them when embarking on hotel projects; you can do a sample room with the Utopia brand to show your clients.

"Yes, their products might be more expensive than the open market, but you can be rest assured that you are buying quality.

"I don't think things like plumbing is where you should gamble or try to play "pennywise pound foolish" with, especially when it comes to basic products like these.

"You can try to save money over products like railwater shower and the likes, but when it comes to flushing systems, you want to go with conceal which is very good because you don't want to be doing maintenance all the time.

"So, I personally feel one should go for something worth it and a brand like Utopia will be a better choice and interestingly, they are also based here in Nigeria," she said.

David Chukwuemeka, one of the visitors at the exhibition who visited the Utopia Booth expressed delight at ...

"I stopped over at the Utopia Bath and Kitchen booth and was wowed and blown away with some of the quality of products I saw here at the AHIS Exhibition.

"I was particularly impressed with the 12 year warranty period on the products, which goes to show you that the materials and fittings we have seen here have met the necessary standards and requirements that we expect from such reputable manfacturers.

"I am definitely looking forward to visiting their showroom in Utako to buy some of their products," he said.

The company’s use of locally sourced materials and focus on energy efficiency also earned commendations from environmental advocates at the event.

In addition to product displays, Utopia Bath and Kitchen hosted workshops and panel sessions on trends in home design and sustainable architecture, further reinforcing its role as a thought leader in the industry.

As Africa’s housing sector continues to grow, Utopia Bath and Kitchen is positioning itself as a key player in redefining residential and commercial spaces across the continent.

Permanent Secretary Visits NWDC Facilities in Kano, Commends Support from Stakeholders

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Regional Development, Dr. Mary A. Ogbe, on Thursday paid a one-day working visit to Kano State to inspect facilities designated for the takeoff of the North-West Development Commission (NWDC).

Dr. Ogbe, accompanied by senior officials from the Ministry, was received by NWDC officials in Kano where she toured facilities donated by the MAAUN Group and BUA Group. The structures are intended to serve as the Commission’s temporary headquarters and Kano State office.
The Permanent Secretary also visited a site donated by the Kano State Government, which is expected to serve as the Commission’s permanent headquarters in the near future.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the North-West Development Commission (NWDC), Prof. Shehu Abdullahi Ma’aji, joined other prominent leaders and stakeholders at the 2-day interactive session on Government–Citizen engagement, organized by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation at Arewa House, Kaduna.

Convened under the theme of strengthening dialogue and rebuilding trust, the forum is a continuation of the Foundation’s earlier efforts to hold leaders to their word and ensure Northern voices shape national policy.

The forum brought together a distinguished array of Northern leaders, including the Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Foundation, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu; the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; federal ministers; and state governors. The session served as a strategic platform to assess the progress of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and to drive progressive dialogue for national development.
In his keynote address, former Niger State Governor and Foundation Chair, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, emphasized that the challenges confronting the North; insurgency, poverty, youth unemployment, out‑of‑school children and porous borders are deeply rooted and predate the current administration. While President Tinubu inherited these longstanding issues, Aliyu rightly called on Northern elites and citizens to share the responsibility by stepping forward with constructive action and accountability.

Vice President Kashim Shettima aptly noted, “What we nurture today is not just a government of the people, but a government with the people.” Echoing this sentiment, the NSA, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, outlined key security achievements in the North, while state governors reaffirmed their strong support for the administration’s reform-driven development efforts.
The presence of federal ministers, policy advisers, and Northern stakeholders in Kaduna is a clear demonstration of this government’s openness to engagement and critique.

NWDC remains firmly aligned with the vision of the Renewed Hope Agenda and is committed to partnering with federal and state governments, traditional institutions, and local communities to ensure delivery on critical priorities from education and security to infrastructure and economic inclusion.

Beyond Your Salary: How To Create Multiple Income Streams By Sale Adamu Kwaru

Introduction

Building multiple income streams is one of the smartest financial strategies you can adopt. It’s like having several smaller rivers flowing into one big lake – if one river dries up, the others keep the lake full. This approach helps you reduce financial risk, significantly boost your overall earnings, and accelerate your journey towards true financial freedom. Whether you're just starting your career, looking to supplement your current income, or planning for retirement, understanding the diverse ways money can come to you is the crucial first step.

6 Powerful Income Streams You Can Cultivate
Let's dive deeper into six common types of income, breaking them down into clear, actionable insights.
1. Earned Income: The Foundation of Your Finances
Earned income is the most direct form of money you receive by actively exchanging your time, skills, or labor for compensation. This is the bedrock for most people's financial lives. It encompasses your regular Monthly salary from an employer, hourly wages, tips, Commissions from sales roles, and bonuses from employment, as well as profits from any business you actively operate where your effort is the primary driver of revenue. While reliable, earned income is often limited by the hours you can work and the market rate for your skills. There's a direct trade-off between your time and your money.
2. Investment Income: Letting Your Money Work for You
Investment income is the money your existing capital generates. Instead of you working for money, your money is put to work, ideally growing and producing returns over time. This involves purchasing assets like stocks, bonds, mutual funds, real estate, or even starting an equity stake in a business. As these assets appreciate or generate income, you benefit. Interest from a savings account or fixed deposit (e.g., Mudarabah in Islamic finance), selling a stock for more than you paid (capital gains), Profits from a Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT), Returns from mutual funds or exchange-traded funds (ETFs): These funds pool money from many investors to buy a diversified portfolio of assets, managed by professionals. Others are Bond interest payments or return from SUKUK where Companies or governments pay you a fixed interest rate or rental fees for lending them money by buying their bonds. Investments carry risk; their value can go down as well as up. It requires research, patience, and often a long-term perspective.
3. Rental Income: Monetizing Your Assets
Rental income is generated by leasing out an asset you own to someone else in exchange for regular payments. While property (residential or commercial) is the most common example, this concept extends to a wide array of assets, including equipment, vehicles, tools, or even unique spaces. Monthly rent from a house or apartment, Leasing photography gear to local studios or individuals, Leasing commercial space for businesses like buildings, retail units, or warehouses. This stream can be more hands-on than pure investment income, requiring management, maintenance, and dealing with tenants. Requires initial capital for the asset purchase.
4. Royalties: Earning from Your Creations
Royalties are payments received by the owner of intellectual property (like books, music, art, patents, or trademarks) each time their original work is sold, performed, licensed, or reproduced by others. It's a way to be compensated repeatedly for a creation that required effort upfront. For instant, earnings each time your song streams online or is played on the radio, payments when your book is sold, e-book downloaded, or licensed for translation/film: Authors receive royalties per copy sold or for various licensing agreements. Others are fees for patented inventions used by manufacturers, licensing your photographs or artwork for use in advertisements or products as well as Software developers earning from app downloads. However, success is not guaranteed, and the income can be unpredictable. Legal protection (copyrights, patents) is crucial.
5. Dividends: Sharing in Company Profits
Dividends are a portion of a company's profits paid out to its shareholders. When you own shares of a dividend-paying company, you receive these cash payouts (or sometimes additional shares) at regular intervals, typically quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. Dividends from listed corporations, dividend Reinvestment Plans (DRIPs), payouts from dividend-focused Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) or mutual funds. Howver, Companies can cut or suspend dividends, especially during difficult economic times. Dividends are typically taxable income.
6. Side Hustles: Actively Building Extra Income
Side hustles are additional activities or gigs you undertake outside your primary job to earn extra money. They often involve leveraging existing skills, hobbies, or available time to provide a service or sell a product. The key is that they require active effort, though they offer flexibility and potential for growth. For instant freelance writing, design, or programming: Offering your professional skills to clients on a project basis, driving for ride-share platforms (e.g., Uber, Bolt) or food delivery services, selling handmade crafts online, tutoring students online or in person. Others are reselling items (e.g., flipping furniture, sneakers, or collectibles): Buying low and selling high on platforms like Jumia, Alibaba, eBay or local marketplaces. However, this requires active time commitment, self-discipline and marketing to find clients or customers.

Steps to Strategically Diversify Your Earnings
Ready to start building your own multi-faceted income portfolio? Follow these practical steps:
1. Review Your Strengths, Interests, and Resources: What are you good at? What do you enjoy doing? What assets do you already own (property, skills, time)? This self-assessment is crucial for choosing the most suitable and enjoyable income streams. Don't force yourself into something you'll hate.
2. Start Small and Test the Waters: Don't try to launch five new income streams at once. Pick one, research it thoroughly, and start modestly. For example, if you're interested in rental income, consider renting out a spare room before buying a whole property. If it's a side hustle, take on a small freelance project. This allows you to learn, make mistakes, and refine your approach without significant financial risk.
3. Track All Earnings and Expenses Diligently: Treat each income stream like a mini-business. Keep meticulous records of all money coming in and going out. This helps you measure true profitability, identify areas for improvement, and manage taxes effectively. Use spreadsheets or simple accounting software.
4. Reinvest Profits to Accelerate Growth: A powerful strategy is to take a portion (or even all) of the profits from one income stream and reinvest it into that same stream or a new one. For instance, dividend income can be reinvested to buy more shares, or profits from a side hustle can fund a down payment on a rental property. This compounding effect significantly speeds up your financial progress.
5. Stay Patient and Persistent: Building sustainable, significant income streams takes time, effort, and often involves setbacks. Don't get discouraged by initial challenges or slower-than-expected growth. Financial success is a marathon, not a sprint. Consistency and learning from your experiences are key.

Conclusion
When you intelligently blending active earned income with more passive streams like investments, rentals, or royalties, you create a robust and resilient financial portfolio. This diversification helps you withstand economic downturns, career changes, or unexpected expenses. Imagine the peace of mind knowing you have multiple sources of money flowing in, regardless of what happens to your primary job. Begin exploring just one new stream today, and you'll be amazed at how quickly your financial picture can transform, leading you closer to true financial independence.
