Kano Deputy Governor Lauds Leadership in Local Government Affairs

Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, the Deputy Governor of Kano State and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, has expressed his confidence in the calibre of individuals tasked with overseeing local government activities in the state.

In a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary Deputy Governors Office, Ibrahim Garba Shu'aibu, said, Gwarzo made this statement while inaugurating a 3-day orientation retreat in Kaduna State focused on the "Operational Guidelines for the Kano State Local Government Interim Management Committee."

He explained that the seminar, featuring a series of presentations, aims to equip participants with the knowledge needed to effectively fulfill their responsibilities and promote the development of local government areas (LGAs).

The Deputy Governor emphasized the importance of understanding operational guidelines, as they will serve as the legal framework for their functions.

"You need to understand all aspects of LGA functions, including the budgeting process, and seek clarifications from your DPMs or Treasurers where necessary," Gwarzo advised the Interim Chairmen.

He reminded all 44 Interim Caretaker Committee Chairmen, Vice-Chairmen, Directors of Personnel Management (DPMs), and Treasurers that their appointments were based on professionalism, qualifications, and the confidence placed in them by the current NNPP administration.

"You are all expected to be responsible in discharging all Local Government Affairs," Gwarzo urged.

He also called on the seminar consultants to focus on fostering a collaborative and sustainable working relationship among Interim Caretaker Committee Chairmen, their vice-chairmen, DPMs, Treasurers, and the entire Interim Members Committee for the betterment of their respective LGAs.

Earlier, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ibrahim Muhammad Kabara, thanked the Deputy Governor for the timely training and encouraged participants to engage wholeheartedly to enhance the development of all LGAs in the state.

The Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Hon. Jibril Ismail Falgore, represented by his Deputy, Hon. Muhammad Bello ButuButu, highlighted that the operational guidelines would provide a framework for day-to-day LGA activities, promoting transparency and accountability to enhance effective service delivery.

Participants expressed their gratitude to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his leadership and support of grassroots governance, and to Deputy Governor Gwarzo for approving the empowerment of LGA administrators with the knowledge necessary for sustainable development.

Gov. Yusuf Stunnes by Drug Dealers' Audacity in Pursuing Court Protection

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has expressed astonishment at the boldness exhibited by certain drug dealers who have sought legal recourse through court orders for the release of confiscated illicit drug shipments.

In an statement issued by the governor's spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, it was disclosed that the governor was taken aback by their actions during his visit to the Kano Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA), where he was briefed on the situation.

Governor Yusuf's amazement was evident as he discovered that individuals engaged in the illicit drug trade had successfully procured court orders for the release of their seized contraband.

He conveyed his profound surprise at the judges who sanctioned such orders, emphasizing the severity of the issue at hand.

In response to this troubling development, Governor Yusuf instructed the state Attorney General to formulate a comprehensive strategy to prevent drug traffickers from exploiting legal loopholes in the future.

He stressed the crucial necessity for collaboration between the judiciary and the government to shield the state from the dangers posed by drug trafficking.

Recognizing the diligence KAROTA in apprehending illicit drugs, the Governor urged the agency to take the requisite actions to eliminate the confiscated substances.

Governor Yusuf Criticizes REMASAB, KAROTA for Substandard Service...

..... Expresses dissatisfaction over the decay of equipment at two public work agencies

Kano state Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has expressed disappointment with performance of Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB), and Kano Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA) in the discharge of their public responsibilities.

This was contained in a statement issued by Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the Spokesperson to the Governor.

Governor Yusuf also ordered the management of the two agencies to submit comprehensive inventory of their equipment to ascertain poor state of facilities. 

The Governor gave the orders after unscheduled visit to the two government agencies where he lamented inefficiency in the management of facilities and personnel of the agencies.

Yusuf who was compiciously worried by the inactive of the agencies regretted the low out of the government agencies despite huge investment and equipment procurement. 

At REMASAP, the Governor discovered seven functional waste evacuation trucks despite the availability of 30, just as three payloaders are working of the 15 available.

The Governor was also informed that 10 workers of REMASAB are permanent and pensionable while the rest are casuals, expressing concern with the situation of casual staff which he described inhuman keeping such personnel for 20 years. 

While at KAROTA head office, the Governor discovered significant number of operational vehicles grounded.

Dissatisfied with the development, the Governor directed KAROTA management to  submit comprehensive inventory of their operational vehicles immediately.

Gov Yusuf said government investment in the provision of operational vehicles to REMASAB was a demonstration of priority atteched the sanitation in state but the management failed to live to expectation.

"I am not happy with what I saw at the two agencies, this calls for a total overhaul of the system, we cannot afford to fail in the discharge of the madates of  agencies like KAROTA and REMASAB" the Governor vowed during an on the spot visit

The Managing Directors of the REMASAB and KAROTO  Hon. Amadu Haruna Zago and Engr. Faisal Mahmoud arrived the scene and were directed to meet the Chief of Staff to the Governor for emergency meeting on how to address the immediate challenges of the agencies.

NSSF: National Inter-Secondary Schools Boys, Girls Milo Basketball Tournament Wind up

This year's national inter secondary schools Milo basketball will end today Friday at the indoor sports hall of the national stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

The tournament which is being organised by the Nigerian School Sports Federation NSSF and sponsors by the Nestle Milo, attracted the host state Lagos, Kaduna, Kano, Gombe, Niger, Cross River, Oyo, Bayelsa and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Abuja.

 Speaking the national president of the Nigerian School Sports Federation NSSF, Olabisi Joseph said arrangements are in top gear towards a colourful final.

Joseph said that the federation in conjunction with the company have successfully organizing the tournament for over two decades which contributed in discovery of hidden talented and skillful players across the country.

She added most of the men and women national basketball players currently were the product of NSSF tournaments, calling on more corporate organisations to complement the state and the federal government efforts in this regard.

The President said that the federation will continue to do its best especially in the area of grassroots development aimed at sustaining the high profile of the country at international engagements.

While expressing appreciate to all those who have contributed in one ways or the other, she charged the executive members of the federation and the sports coordinators across the country to continue to project and promote various sporting events in order to actualize the set objectives

Meanwhile, Rumfa College basketball team, the representative of Kano state in the tournament has make an impact in the championship.

The director of sports in Kano state ministry of education, Malam Ibrahim Bello stated this in an interview with newsmen in Lagos.

Bello said despite the fact that Team Kano lost in the semi final against its Niger state counterpart, the boys deserve commendation for their commitment and determination during the match.

The director however applauded Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his unflinching support morally and financially to the state contingent.

Bello assured that the state ministry of education will do everything possible to ensure they continue projecting the good image of the state at various national competition in the country.

Kano Donates N14 million, Food Stuff To Family of Accident Victims Under Education Ministry

Kano State Government has donated N14 million and food stuff to the deceased family and accident victims under the state ministry of education.

Distributing the donation today Wednesday to the family victims at Governor's College, the state commissioner of education Alhaji Umar Doguwa disclosed that the gesture was part of the present administration concern in symphatizing with family of the deceased and those who got injured due to car accident while pursuing their academic carrier.

Umar Doguwa said among the victims were late Abubakar Umar a student of Government Secondary school Bichi who was innocently killed recently while in school and whose case is still under thorough investigation, late Abdulkadir Suleiman a student of Exchange Programme who studied at Adamawa State and died recently due to brief illness, 

The remainig were late Hajara Mustapha Waziri a student of Governor's College who lost her life due to car accident and Hajiya Safiya Ahmed, the Pricipal of Government Girls Secondary School Kabo who also lost her life due to car accident.

Others were those that sustained injury as a result of car accident. namely Nana Ibrahim, Fatima Abdullahi Adamu and Ummulkhairi Nura all from Governor's College.

According to the commissioner, each of the victim was given a cash donation of N2 million, two bags of rice, one bag of Maize, one carton of sphagetti and one carton of Macroni.

He said " the administration of Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf does not only pays attention to the provision of learning materials, construction and renovation of schools among others, but is becoming much interested on the general welfare of both the students and teachers at large.

" I want to assure you that Kano State Government will do everything possible to find out those who have hands in the murder of Abubakar Umar and justice must be done to ensure that the culprits are dealt with according to the law ".

While thanking the Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf for his concern over the condition of the victims and their family, Commissioner Doguwa prayed for Almighty Allah to forgive those who lost their life and a quick recovery for those who sustained injury.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of Ministry Hajiya Kubra Imam urged the family of the victims to continue to pray to their lost ones for Allah's mercy.

Speaking on behalf of the family victims, the grandfather of late Abubakar Umar thanked the Governor for his concern and prayed Allah to continue to guide him to succeed.

Kano Education Ministry Refutes Claims About Credential Submission for Teacher Recruitment

The Kano State Ministry of Education has debunked rumours calling those who have NCE Certificate to submit their credentials to State Library Board for new teachers recruitment.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Director Public Enlightenment of the Ministry Balarabe Abdullahi Kiru and made available to the newsmen today Wednesday, 26th June, 2024.

The statement described the audio clip that is going viral in which unadentified persons and voice of a lady calling people with NCE certificate to submit their credentials to Kano State Library Board for teachers recruitment as untrue and misleading information.

It therefore urged people to disregard this audio clip trending on the social media, stressing that as government recently recruited and distributed 5600 offers to Basic Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) teachers through formal process, giving genue information by the office of the Head of Service, Ministry of Education and SUBEB, the same process would also be used for the subsequent recruitment.

" There is no element of true in all the information circulating in the social media requesting people with NCE to submit their credentials to Kano State Library for new teachers recruitment.

" If there is anything regarding teachers recruitment, the information should come from the office of the Head of Service, the Ministry of Education and SUBEB " the statement explained.

NSSF: National Inter Secondary schools Boys, Girls Milo Basketball Commences in Lagos

This year's national inter secondary schools Milo basketball finals will commence today Sunday at the indoor sports hall of the national stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

 A statement signed by the president of the Nigerian School Sports Federation NSSF, Bisi Joseph said arrangements have been put in place towards the success of the championship.

She called on the participant teams to exhibit sportsmanship in order to actualize it set objectives.

Joseph assured that the organisers and the competition's sponsor would do everything possible to ensure free and fair tournament.

Meanwhile, the director of sports in the Kano state ministry of education, Malam Ibrahim Bello applauded Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his unflinching support morally and financially to the state contingent.

Journalists recinds ban on covering Kano Government Activities

The Correspondents' Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kano State Chapter, wishes to inform the general public that it has lifted its ban on coverage of Kano State Government activities, with immediate effect.

A statement issued by the Chairman of the elite body, Alhaji Aminu Ahmed Garko, shortly after its emergency Congress meeting to review the 14-day-old boycott, explained that the decision to blacklist government activities was taken to protest Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf's administration's handling of issues affecting its members and the journalism profession in general. 

The statement said: "The chapel has however come to realize that the boycott has had unintended consequences on its members' actions, particularly during this time of crisis in Kano."

"As journalists, our constitutional mandate is to inform the public and hold those in power accountable, but our boycott has limited our ability to fulfill this mandate, and we have come to realize that it is the public that is suffering the most from our absence," Garko said in the statement.

Part of the resolutions of the chapel read thus : "We are aware that our boycott has created a vacuum in the reporting of government activities, and we do not want our absence to be exploited by those who peddle fake news, and seek to misinform the public."

"After careful consideration, we have decided to call off the boycott and resume our reportage of government activities. We believe that our presence at government events and activities is crucial in ensuring that the public is well-informed."

"We want to assure the public that we will continue to hold the government accountable for its actions, but we will do so in a manner that does not harm the public interest."

"We appreciate the understanding and support of the public during this period and promise to rededicate ourselves to our constitutional mandate of informing and educating the public."

"We hope that our decision to call off the boycott will be seen as a positive step towards resolving the issues that led to our boycott in the first place, and we look forward to working with the government to address the issues that affect our members and the journalism profession as a whole," the chairman added.

School Encroachment: Kano Ministerial Committee Visits Over 160 Schools, 42 Need Urgent Govt. Attention, 90 Need Wall Fencing

......As the Committee Submits its Report

Kano Ministerial Committee on Land Encroachment and Trespass in Schools has submitted it's final report after visiting over 160 affected public schools across the 44 Local Government Areas of the State.

It could be recalled that on 22nd February, 2024, 16-member committee on land encroachment and trespass in school was set up by the state to identify schools affected with problems of trespass or encroachment and examine their level in the vulnerable schools.

Presenting the final report of the committee findings to the Commissioner of Education today Friday, the Chairman of the committee, Alhaji Habib Hassan El-Yakub maintained that upon the inauguration of the committee, the members mobilised for the pursuit of the assignment by going round all the identified schools to access the level of trespass or encroachment.

In a statement signed by the Director Public Enlightenment of the Ministry, Balarabe Abdullahi Kiru, said the Chairman disclosed that the committee had classified the schools visited in to three categories which include schools that have wall fence, schools that are requiring wall fencing as well as schools that need urgent government attention.

" The Hon Commissioner, I want to inform you that out of the 162 schools visited by the committee, 72 of them have wall fence, 90 of the schools need to have wall fence while 42 of them need urgent government attention to save them from the situation they found themselves.

" This committee had experienced a lot of challenges while discharging it's assigned responsibilities which can be attributed to some people attitudes towards land and how the immediate past administration allocated schools land to individuals rampantly " he explained.

Alhaji Habib Hassan revealed that the Committee had come out with general recommendations in line with it's findings for the benefit of other stakeholders within and outside the educational sector.

He expressed optimism that the administration of Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf would put in to considerations the recommendation made by the committee in it's effort to improve learning environment in the state.

" We really thank the ministry for finding us worthy of the assignment and I believe His Excellency the Governor while receiving this report, is going to do what is possible to save our schools from the menace of land encroachment and trespass " the chairman disclosed.

Receiving the report today Friday in his office, the state commissioner of education Alhaji Umar Haruna Doguwa assured full implementation of the report of the Ministerial Committee.

He said considering the composition of the right people involved in the committee, the members had done what is required from them by the given terms of references. 

Doguwa therefore commended the members for their good work and timely completion of the assignment which he described as sign of patriotism and commitment. 

The Commissioner however lamented that the menace of trespass and land encroachment in school had been undermining the progress of schools in the state, stressing that the present administration is taking serious measures to address the situation.

" I want to assure you that the present administration of Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf is fully committed towards providing conducive learning environment for the future generations, and that what necessitated the setting of this committee which today presents it's report " said Doguwa.

" This administration is going to take rigorous decision to what is been submitted as report of the committee. Our doors will remain opened for any other advice or observations as regard to how we can collectively overcome the menace of schools encroachment " he stated.

Kano Anti-Graft Agency Arrests Two Suspects, Summons Three Permanent Secretaries Over Alleged Fraud

The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission has arrested two suspects and invited three Permanent Secretaries for questioning over an alleged fraud involving the sale of employment forms in the Office of the Head of Service.

The commission’s Chairman, Muhuyi Rimin-Gado, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Wednesday that the investigation was ongoing to identify and bring to justice those responsible for the scam.

He said that already, thousands of desperate job seekers have been affected by the fraud.

”Preliminary investigations have uncovered fraudulent activities at the office of the Head of Service, Civil Service Commission, Kano State Secondary Schools Board, and Health Service Management Board.

”The two suspects in custody are cooperating with the investigation, which has led to the shutdown of a fake employment portal.

”The commission is working to root out corruption and ensure justice is served in the employment fraud scandal that has defrauded thousands of job seekers,” Rimin-Gado said.

According to him, the ongoing investigation aims to expose and bring to justice those responsible for the fraudulent sale of the employment forms.

“The commission is working to prevent corruption and ensure that justice is served. The state government has mandated the commission to thoroughly investigate the matter and prosecute those found wanting.”
