EDIL-KABIR BREAK: Kano Government Approves Vacation Date For Primary, Post Primary Schools

Kano State Government has directed all Primary and Post Primary Schools in the state to proceed for the Edil-Kabir Break from Friday, 14th June, 2024 to Monday 24th June, 2024 for day students, and for boarding students from Friday 14th June, 2024 to Sunday 23rd June, 2024 respectively.

A statement signed by the Director Public Enlightenment Ministry of Education Balarabe Abdullahi Kiru announced that parents and guardians of students in boarding schools are therefore requested to pick up their wards by the early hours of Friday, 14th June, 2024.

It further explained that all other aspects of the 2023/2024 school academic calendar which include the stipulated public holidays remained valid.

The statement quoted the Commissioner of Education, Alhaji Umar Haruna Doguwa through the Director Public Enlightenment calling on parents and guardians to ensure that their children comply with the resumption date as disciplinary action will be taken against any student/pupil who fails to resume on the stipulated date.

" As we thank the good people of the state for the usual support and cooperation given to the Ministry at all times, I wish all the students and pupils for a successful Sallah Break " the statement added 

Kano Government Collaborates With PLANE To Revitalize Education Sector

Kano State Government has reiterated it's total commitment to work closely with Partnership For Leaning For All in Nigeria (PLANE) to revitalize the the state education sector.

In a statement signed by the Director Public Enlightenment of the Ministry, Balarabe Abdullahi Kiru, said the State Commissioner of Education Alhaji Umar Haruna Doguwa gave the assurance today Tuesday while receiving a team from the PLANE (FCDO) head office, Abuja that paid him a courtesy visit in his office.

Umar Doguwa explained that so far, Kano benefited a lot from the intervention projects of PLANE which according to him, yielded positive impacts to the present administration commitment in ensuring quality education in the state.

The Commissioner said it is obvious the present administration had inherited the state education sector in a stage of total dilapidation and decay of schools infrastructures and lack of instructional materials resulting to non conducive learning environment.

" We have produced a documentary programme portraying total neglect and decay of the education sector meaning that we have a lot to do in order to address all the challenges of the education sector " said Doguwa.

He therefore maintained that the administration is fully determine to work with relevant stakeholders like PLANE to ensure that all the problems inherited from the immediate past administration on the education sector are critically addresseed.

The Commissioner explained that there are three basic components that the present administration focuses to improve the education sector which bordered around access, quality and infrastructures development in schools.

" Presently, the administration is more concern on the issue of access to education by the out of school children we have in the state and the quality of the education being given to students.

" So, as we really thank and appreciate your intervention programmes on education in Kano, we are still urging PLANE to fully engaged with present administration in providing access opportunity and quality education to our children " he disclosed.

Earlier, the Deputy National Team Lead FCDO Sam Achimugu said the team was at the Commissioner's office to intimate him on the intervention programmes executed in Kano by PLANE specifically on education sector.

He explained that under the project, over 8000 primary schools teachers were trained in Kano and the program was conducted with full collaboration of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB)

Other intervention programmes according to the team leader, include coordination of books distribution and other learning materials at the classroom level across the 532 schools in Kano, supporting 35 school based management committee that sensitized stakeholders on book care and maintenance among others.

He said in an effort to restore the quality of education in the state, Kano Government in conjunction with PLANE had recently formed 19-member Committee to organize a Conference on education recovery, stressing that preparations had gone far for the commencement of the conference.

" This conference is aimed at facilitating technical deliberations on education access, including topical issues like out of school children, Almajiri school system, Qur'anic and Tsangaya education, teacher professional development, girls education and female teacher shortage especially in rural areas among others " he disclosed.

While appreciating the immense support and cooperation given to the project by the administration, Sam explained that to achieve better result of the intervention programme, the ministry should try as much as possible to provide essential document, indicator and ensure sustainability of any development project embark upon with PLANE.

NAHCON Greenlights Clinic for Kano Pilgrims in Makkah

In an effort to provide adequate medical care to its pilgrims, the Kano State Government with the approval of National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, has established clinics in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. 

The clinics, which are aimed at complementing the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) clinic, will provide required medical attention to the state's pilgrims.

The State Amirul Hajj and Deputy Governor of Kano State, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, is scheduled to visit the clinic immediately upon his arrival from Madinah to assess the level of commitment of the state pilgrim board to the pilgrims.

Ibrahim Garba Shuaibu, The Head of Media Team for Kano State Pilgrims and also the Deputy Governor’s Spokesperson, disclosed this in a statement circulated to journalists.

According to Ibrahim, he said the Coordinator of Health Matters for the State Pilgrims Board, Hajiya Binta Yusuf revealed that approval has been given for the clinics, which will operate in House Number 5 in Makkah. 

“NAHCON officials have visited the site and given their approval for the clinic to operate” She noted.

Binta noted that, recall, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf had earlier sponsored a team of 11 health professionals, led by Professor Abdurrahman Abbas Sheshe, to provide medical care to the state's intending pilgrims. 

Adding that establishment of the clinics is a further demonstration of the state government's commitment to the welfare of its citizens.

She noted that Kano is the only state in Nigeria that NAHCON approved to open the clinic for its pilgrims in Makkah.

Kano Probes Empowerment Fraud Amidst Allegations Of Official Complicity

 

The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission on Sunday said it has commenced investigations on alleged scam that rocked the empowerment of street Hawkers by the Kano state governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf last week.

The probe comes on the heels of a viral video exposing the fraudulent activities of rogue officials, who allegedly coerced beneficiaries into surrendering a significant portion of the N50,000 grants received during a recent ceremony.

This tabloid learnt that most of the original beneficiaries were denied access to the Coronation Hall, where the event took place with impersonators.

Abba Kabir Yusuf had in a colourful ceremony last Friday gifted no fewer than 465 street Hawkers with N50,000 to swell their capital

In 60 second video, one Nura Isa confessed before a suspected female Investigator that shortly after the ceremony, “we were cornered in batches by certain officials to drop N45,000 from the N50,000 cash given to us in the public glare”

Isa explained that “we are 100 in our batch that were cornered by the officials under a strict watch of his boys to comply in our own interest”.

The Commission’s Chairman, Muhuyi Magaji Rimin-Gado, assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to identify and bring to justice those responsible, regardless of their position or influence within the government.

The agency is determined to prevent the corruption from undermining the integrity of the empowerment initiative and ensure that justice is served.

Kano-ACReSAL Celebrates 2024 World Environment Day with Site Visit

The State Commissioner of Environment who is also the Chairman State Steering Committee of Kano-ACReSAL Rt. Honorable Nasiru Sule Garo led a team comprising top officials of the ministry, State Project Management Unit (SPMU) staff and journalist to Gumawa forest in Gabasawa LGA. 

The visit was embarked upon today, shortly after holding a conference with the press at the Conference Hall of the State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.

When addressing journalist, the commissioner lauded the tremendous achievements of the  Government under the able leadership of His Excellency the Executive Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf in the area of environmental promotion.

"Let me reiterate that Kano State Government under the startling leadership of His Excellency Alh. Abba Kabir Yusuf is given priority attention to the Environment Sector especially in the areas of biodiversity conservation, restoration of degraded lands, addressing climate change issues, fight against the menace of desertification and desert encroachment, pollution control, environmental sanitation, prevention of flooding, erosion prevention and control, among many others". 

The commissioner further applauded Kano State government support and commitment to ACReSAL project for the benefit of the citizenry."

The commissioner further reflect on the numerous impactful projects implemented by Kano-ACReSAL, such as the provision of the state-of-the -art laboratory equipment and apparatus for the soil and water laboratory in the Department of Geography  Northwest university Kano; Institutional support to the Ministry of Environment for 2023 annual drainage  clearance to avert flooding to mention but few. ACReSAL program itself is a large-scale effort, encompassing multiple States in Northern Nigeria.

"ACReSAL also made a deliberate effort to leverage on technical expertise of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) through mutual agreement to restore 350,000 hectares of degraded  land in an effort to address food in security. Kano State has come along way in the area of land  restoration as hundreds of hectares have been prepared for  plantings across the project identified location in Kano state, the commissioner added.

Alhaji Nasiru Sule Garo the described the visit  to the site today as part of activities to set to carry out in commemoration of the 2024 World Environment Day. Reckoning that Kan-ACReSAL project would undertake other turnkey project in the area of environmental restoration, water supply, irrigation, institutional support and many more.

 

At the site, the State Project Coordinator Dr. Dahir Muhammad Hashim conducted the team, led by the commissioner to tour the prepared land for the FAO intervention in Gumawa forest Gabasawa LGA.

Education: Kano Government Declares State of Emergency

Passionate and committed about rescuing the education sector from total collapse, Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf has today (Saturday) formally declared State of Emergency on Education.

This was contained in a statement made available to newsmen by the governor's spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa in Kano 

Delivering his address at an elaborate occasion that was held at the Open Theatre, Government House, Governor Abba Kabir said, declaring the state of emergency will allow government to take bold steps to address critical challenges bedeviling the  sector across the street.

According to the governor, the objective of declaration  of state of emergency on education is encapsulated in the overall vision for the education delivery in a vision statement viz:

Every school, a good school; every child, enrolled child, every student, an engaged learner; every teacher, a caring educator; every parent, a supportive partner; and your government, a committed investor in human capital development.

He added that the declaration will enable the government to mobilize resources, implement urgent reforms, and focus on strategic interventions that will rebuild the educational infrastructure,  provide necessary materials, a step that will pave way for every child in Kano State to have access to quality education, which is their fundamental right.

Alhaji Abba Kabir explained provisions made to strengthen the declaration that includes: allocation of 29.95% of 2024 budget; restoration of upkeep and overhead funds for secondary schools; Unveils plan for building an additional 300 laboratories, plan to construct 1000 classrooms within the next academic session and reopening of all the boarding school closed by the immediate past administration.

Others are; plan for comprehensive renovation of all primary and junior secondary schools;28, 264 classes in the next three years to enroll out of school children; to commence distribution of one-meal per child per day in all primary schools and reintroduction of distribution of free uniforms to all primary I pupils among others.

In the same vein, the state government has offered full time job to 5,632 BESDA  (Better Education Service Delivery for All)teachers, approved for hiring of additional 10,000 teachers with intensified effort of continuous periodic training and retraining of teachers so as to achieve the vision of making " every teacher, a caring educator".

The government has also approved the disbursement of the sum of 300 million naira as soft loan to teachers working under the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) across the state.

The Governor used the opportunity to extensively dwelt on the feats achieved by his administration within one year in office in the area of educational development in the nooks and crannies of Kano State.

He reminded parents that the responsibility for improving the educational sector doesn't rest  solely with the government, but it is a collective endeavor requiring the cooperation of parents, communities and stakeholders in the education sector.

Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf thanked the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Sen. Remi Tinubu for donating 110,000 exercise books to the state that were distributed during the occasion.

The chairman of the occasion and former governor of Cross Rivers State, Donald Duke doffed hat to Kano State Government for being a face setter as the occasion symbolizes re-birth of education not only in Kano, but in the northern part of the country.

In his submission, a special guest and former governor of Kano State, Sen. Rabi'u Musa Kwankwaso expressed joy for the development and called on all and sundry to support governor Abba Kabir Yusuf in taking Kano to greater heights.

He admonished newly employed teachers to accept their posting to rural areas with good minds to achieve the desired goals and objectives.

The occasion was graced by stakeholders on education at the Federal, States levels and Development Partners.

Kano State Amirul Hajj Arrives Saudi Arabia to Lead Pilgrims in Hajj Exercise

In a remarkable display of dedication and devotion, 3,110 pilgrims from Kano State have embarked on the journey of a lifetime to perform the sacred Hajj ritual in Saudi Arabia. 

Led by the Deputy Governor of Kano State Comr. Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo who also serves as the Amirul Hajj is accompanied by top government officials, including the Director General of the State Pilgrims Welfare Board, Alhaji Lamin Rabiu Danbappa, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Yusuf Jibril Falgore, and other dignitaries.

Ibrahim Garba Shuaibu, the Head of Media Team for Kano State pilgrims and also the spokesperson of the Deputy Governor of Kano State revealed that the pilgrims are being supported by the Kano State government to ensure a seamless and spiritual experience.

According to Garba, the Kano pilgrims who were airlifted to Saudi Arabia via Max Air, with the last batch departing from Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) last Saturday, were seen off by management and board members of the pilgrims board, as well as team leaders of various communities constituted by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

The pilgrims are being provided with comfortable accommodation and meals in Mecca. 

The Kano State government has also established a medical team to provide healthcare services to the pilgrims as needed.

According to Shuaibu the pilgrims are in high spirits and are eager to perform the Hajj rituals. 

The Kano pilgrims spent four days in Medina, where they visited important sites, including the Prophet's Mosque and the tomb of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). They have since departed for Mecca, where they will perform the Umrah and await the Arafat exercise, which will take place next week.

This year's Hajj exercise is particularly significant for Kano State, as it marks a major milestone in the state's efforts to support its citizens in performing this important religious duty. 

The Kano State government has demonstrated its commitment to the well-being of its citizens, and this gesture is a testament to that commitment.

Kano Govt. Sponsors 119,903 Students For 2024 NECO and NBAIS Examination

Kano State Government will sponsor 119,903 students who sat for the 2024 Qualifying Examination across the 44 Local Government Areas of the state to write the forth coming National Examination Council (NECO) and National Board For Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS) examination.

This was made known today Thursday by the state Commissioner of Education Alhaji Umar Haruna Doguwa while addressing Newsmen in his office.

In a statement signed by the Director Public Enlightenment of the Ministry, Balarabe Abdullahi Kiru, said Umar Haruna disclosed that earlier, a proposal was made to Kano State Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf on 8 credits (including mathematics and English) bench mark for a student to pass the qualifying examination which was later rejected by the Governor and opted to pay for any student that pass 4 credits in any course.

" By this development, about 109,891 students representing 83% who sat for KERD qualifying examination would be sponsored by the government while 10,012 students representing 97.24% who sat for the NBAIS qualifying examination would also  be sponsored by the government.

" A total cost of N2,664,856,750 ( Two Billion, Six Hundred and Sixty Four Million, Eight Hundred and Fifty Six Thousand, Seven Hundred and fifty Naira) would be spent by government on NECO whereby N248,826,000 (Two Hundred and Forty Eight Million, Eight Hundred and Twenty Six Thousand Naira would be spent on NBAIS examination respectively " said Doguwa.

Umar Doguwa explained that for both  NECO and NBAIS students, Kano State Government would pay the sum of N2,910,652,700 ( Two Billion, Nine Hundred and Ten Million, Six Hundred and Fifty Two Thousands, Seven Hundred Naira ) which he said would enable most of the students in the state who can not afford paying to write the examinations.

He explained that when the present administration of Abba Kabir Yusuf came in, there was a system by the previous government of sponsoring candidates with 6 credits including Mathematics and English and that represented only 34% of students who sat for NECO and 20% of students who sat for NBAIS examination in 2022.

The Commissioner added...." In our effort to ensure that our students get admission to higher institutions, the administration of Abba Kabir Yusuf had paid NECO and NBAIS for the 2021, 2022 and 2023 registration fees inherited from the previous government ". 

He called on the people in the state to continue to support the present administration in it's effort to improve  the education sector.

Abdulmumin Kofa Dispense Money To Constituents For Eid Celebrations

Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa, the member representing Kiru and Federal Constituency in Kano, continues his longstanding tradition of supporting his constituents by making a generous cash donation for Eid celebrations. 

Jibrin handed over the money to the NNPP (New Nigeria Peoples Party) Chairmen of Kiru and Bebeji. He entrusted them with the responsibility of ensuring a fair and equitable distribution, emphasizing the importance of justice and transparency in the process.

This year, the donation is set to benefit a wide range of community members, including local leaders, women and youth groups, religious and traditional rulers, as well as social media influencers who play a crucial role in community engagement and information dissemination.

1st Anniversary: Gov. Yusuf To Declare State of Emergency On Education, Tuesday

The Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, is poised to declare a state of emergency in the education sector, aiming to expedite efforts to enhance the delivery of educational services and ensure to quality education for all in Kano.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Governor's spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, on Sunday.

The Governor, who is set to declare the state of emergency on Tuesday, has said that it is in fulfillment of one of his crucial campaign promises outlined in his document titled "My Commitment for Kano," which was formulated and presented to the public in 2022, ahead of the 2023 elections.

"The declaration of a state of emergency in education is intended to hasten actions in delivering services to guarantee access to quality education for all in Kano,"

"Concerned about the deteriorating state of the education sector, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is prepared to declare a state of emergency in education in order to expedite a comprehensive overhaul of the sector and propose a definitive solution to the current challenges in higher, secondary, and primary education." The statement said.

The forthcoming event will convene all pertinent stakeholders in the field of education, including development partners, state and federal agencies, as well as esteemed dignitaries such as the Minister of Education, governors from other states, members of the academic community, and representatives from the media.

Scheduled to take place on Tuesday, the 4th of June, 2024, at the open arena of the Government House in Kano, the event will be broadcast on Channels TV and various local stations.
