SAPZ Kano partners ABCOAD to organize FFS Training for Youth and Women.

The Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) Programme, Kano State, in collaboration with Audu Bako College of Agriculture, Dambatta (ABCOAD), has commenced a two-day Farmer Field School (FFS) training for youth and women as part of efforts to promote sustainable agriculture, food security, and improved nutrition.

According to the Public Relations Officer of the College, Muhammad Dahiru Hudu, the training, sponsored by the SAPZ Programme with support from the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), is being facilitated by Audu Bako College of Agriculture, Dambatta.

The Farmer Field School (FFS) is to equip participants with practical, climate-smart agricultural knowledge and modern farming techniques that will enhance productivity, improve livelihoods, and contribute to building a healthier and more nutritious society.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the State Programme Coordinator of SAPZ Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ilyasu, welcomed the beneficiaries and reminded them that they were selected from among thousands of applicants based on the programme's selection criteria

.

He urged the participants to take full advantage of the training by actively participating in both the classroom and practical sessions, noting that the programme includes intensive demonstrations on the farmland provided for the exercise.

According to him, Audu Bako College of Agriculture, Dambatta, was selected to facilitate the training because of its proven track record and outstanding capacity in delivering modern agricultural education and practical skills.

The State Programme Coordinator congratulated the participants on behalf of the Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Kano State, while appreciating the continued support of the Kano State Government, the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), and IFAD towards youth and women empowerment.

In her remarks, the SAPZ Knowledge Management and Communication Officer, Hajiya Rabi Mustapha Ibrahim, described the training as a significant milestone in the programme's commitment to empowering women and youth through nutrition-sensitive agriculture.

She disclosed that the initiative would train 200 beneficiaries, the majority of whom are women, with the expectation that the knowledge acquired would positively impact agricultural production, household nutrition, and ultimately benefit up to two million people across the state.

Earlier, the Provost of Audu Bako College of Agriculture, Dambatta, Dr. Hassan Ibrahim, expressed appreciation to the SAPZ Kano Programme for selecting the College to facilitate the training. He also thanked the Kano State Government, the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), and IFAD for their unwavering support towards agricultural development and human capital empowerment.

Dr. Hassan Ibrahim encouraged the beneficiaries to remain committed throughout the two-day intensive training, emphasizing that the knowledge and practical skills they acquire would position them for greater productivity and self-reliance.

The training features classroom sessions on Climate-Smart Agriculture, Agribusiness Development, Precision Agriculture, and other innovative farming practices, alongside practical demonstrations on land preparation, harrowing, tilling, spraying, irrigation management, and erosion control.

Also speaking, the SAPZ PIU Environmental and Climate Change Specialist, Dr. Kabiru Yau Abdullahi, commended Audu Bako College of Agriculture for its reputation as one of the region's leading agricultural training institutions and highlighted the importance of environmentally sustainable farming practices.

The Kano State Government has provided over 1,500 hectares of agricultural land across Tukui, Kadawa, Bagauda, and Bunkure to support the implementation of the programme.

As part of the opening activities, the State Programme Coordinator and members of the Project Implementation Unit (PIU) conducted an inspection tour of the College's two-hectare irrigation demonstration farm with the first batch of 

beneficiaries.

There are people who talk for a living. Then there are people like Prof. Sule Yau Sule — who use communication to build institutions, shape narratives, and lift others.

Today we celebrate not just a title, but a life of service now crowned with the position of Professor of Strategic Communication. We are celebrating an attainment in Strategic Communication by someone who has devoted his life in service of his people. We’re celebrating the elevation of Sule Yau Sule to the rank of Professor of Strategic Communication by the Bayero University Kano.

For over 30 years, Prof. Sule has distinguished himself as a practicing journalist, activist, administrator and scholar. These three decades from 1990’s are the most impressive period of his impact. Congratulations, Prof. Sule Yau Sule.

He is the first Northerner to attain triple Communication Fellowship – Fellow of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE). Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) and Fellow of the Advertising Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON). 

He is also the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Image Merchants Promotion (IMPR), a leading and multi-award winning public relations firm and publisher of PRNigeria, Economic Confidential and Spokespersons Digest.

I recall our days at The Triumph Newspapers in the early 1990s, as Secretary of the Chapel while I served as Chairman. He personally supported our activities, defended truth all the time, gave voice to the voiceless, and was always concerned about members’ welfare. He used personal resources, contacts and connections to ensure the welfare of our members.

From the newsroom, life took him to Kano Government House. As Spokesman to Kano State Governors — Late Col. Aminu Isa Kontagora, Late Brig. Dominic Abukadata Oneya, and Sen. Malam Ibrahim Shekarau — Prof. Sule brought clarity and direction to governance. In that demanding role, he managed crises, explained policies, and built bridges between government and the citizens. His tenure remains a reference point in public communication and in the areas of support to members and related associations in the field of journalism.

Prof. Sule did not just study communication theory. He lived it. He equally proved that leadership is not about speaking the loudest, but speaking the truest at the right time. That public service is not about position, but about impact. He was a Professor in “Deed” before securing the Title.

A distinguished Nigerian communication expert, journalist, and public relations strategist, Prof. Sule has over three decades of experience in both the public and private sectors, contributed immensely with many publications and Op-Ed articles. In Kano and beyond, Sule is a household name on local and international radio stations and has featured prominently on many Television talk-shows on issues of politics, governance and ethics.

In an era where communication is often reduced to propaganda, he remains a model of competence, character, and credibility. He showed that you can be firm without being rude, be in government without losing your conscience, and rise to the top while pulling others up.

Now at Bayero University Kano, Sule’s elevation to a full professor of communication is a testimony that crowns a career built on excellence without arrogance and service without noise.

Congratulations, Prof. I doff my hat. I believe, this new chapter is not a finish line. It is a higher platform from which you will continue to teach, guide, and inspire the next generation of communicators, while enhancing your service to the people.

FG Urges KOICA, FAO to Align Agricultural Intervention with Nigeria’s Development Priorities, Ward-Based Strategy

The Federal Government has called for stronger alignment between development partners’ interventions and Nigeria’s national development priorities to ensure greater impact, sustainability, and measurable outcomes, as the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) prepare to implement a new multi-bilateral agricultural project in Nigeria.

Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, made the call on Wednesday during a courtesy visit by KOICA officials to brief the Ministry on the KOICA-FAO 2026 Multi-Bilateral Project, which aims to promote resilient agricultural systems and create green jobs for youth in Nigeria and other participating African countries.

While appreciating the longstanding partnership between Nigeria and the Korean government through KOICA, Senator Bagudu stressed the importance of designing development programmes that are focused, measurable, and capable of delivering scalable results.

He noted that Nigeria’s relationship with Korea offers valuable lessons, given Korea’s remarkable transformation from an agricultural economy to a major global economic player.

“Beyond the support we receive, there is much Nigeria can learn from Korea’s experience, particularly in agriculture, food production, value addition, and export development,” the minister said.

Senator Bagudu, who explained that the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning is responsible for coordinating national development planning and partnerships, emphasised that development partners’ interventions must align with Nigeria’s development framework, including the country’s long-term vision under Agenda 2050.

He noted that Nigeria’s federal structure, with responsibilities shared among federal, state, and local governments, makes coordination essential to achieving sustainable development outcomes.

The minister encouraged KOICA and FAO to adopt a more targeted approach, focusing interventions on specific communities where results can be measured and replicated.

According to him, spreading projects too widely without sufficient depth may limit their effectiveness, whereas focused interventions can produce successful models that attract further investment and expansion.

“We need programmes that can produce concepts that work, can be scaled, and can attract the private sector,” he said.

Senator Bagudu emphasised the importance of aligning agricultural interventions with the economic realities and priorities of beneficiary communities.

He cited Nasarawa State as an example, noting that women rice farmers and processors who have struggled to compete with large-scale milling operations could benefit from improved technology, skills development, and stronger market access.

He also highlighted opportunities in Bayelsa State, particularly in aquaculture, where targeted support could unlock significant economic potential and promote sustainable production.

The minister stressed that empowering farmers requires more than production support; they must also be equipped with knowledge of market demands, value addition, and globally competitive agricultural practices.

He noted that Nigeria has significant opportunities in commodities such as sesame, cocoa, fisheries, and other high-value agricultural products, and added that the country’s farmers should be supported in accessing international markets.

“Sometimes, what is needed is to teach people what the world requires — to help them move from traditional production to producing what the market values,” Senator Bagudu said.

He further urged KOICA and FAO to integrate their intervention with existing government programmes, including the Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme, which aims to coordinate development activities across Nigeria’s 8,809 wards.

The minister explained that a ward-based approach would help prevent project duplication, improve stakeholder coordination, and ensure that interventions address the specific needs of communities.

Earlier, the Senior Deputy Country Director of KOICA, Mr Baik Ki-Hyun, disclosed that the project had been approved by KOICA’s headquarters and would run from 2026 to 2030.

He explained that the initiative followed extensive consultations, surveys, and assessments carried out with FAO, external experts, and relevant Nigerian authorities.

According to him, FAO will serve as the implementing partner, while KOICA will oversee project management, monitoring, evaluation, and assessment of the programme’s outcomes.

The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, Dr Deborah Odoh, welcomed the KOICA delegation and expressed appreciation for Korea’s continued partnership with Nigeria, noting that the intervention would contribute to economic growth, improved livelihoods, and sustainable agricultural development.

The KOICA-FAO project is expected to strengthen agricultural resilience, create employment opportunities for young Nigerians, support inclusive growth, and deepen cooperation between Nigeria and Korea to achieve shared development objectives.

Gov. Yusuf Condoles Sokoto Governor, Sultan, and People of Sokoto Over the Death of Former Finance Minister

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has extended his heartfelt condolences to the Governor of Sokoto State, Dr. Ahmad Aliyu, the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammadu Sa'ad Abubakar III, the government and people of Sokoto State over the passing of Nigeria's former Minister of Finance, former High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, and the Sardaunan Sokoto, Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji, who died on Thursday at a hospital in Abuja after a brief illness.

This was contained in a condolence message issued by the Governor's Spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, on Thursday.

Governor Yusuf described the late Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji as an accomplished public servant, seasoned economist, distinguished diplomat, and patriotic Nigerian whose remarkable service to the nation, particularly as Nigeria's Minister of Finance and former High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, left an enduring legacy in the country's economic management, diplomacy, and public administration.

The Governor noted that the deceased devoted his life to the service of Nigeria and the development of Sokoto State, earning widespread respect through his integrity, wisdom, and untiring commitment to national progress.

He said the death of the former minister and diplomat is a monumental loss not only to Sokoto State but also to Nigeria, considering his immense contributions to public service, economic development, diplomacy, and nation-building over several decades.

Governor Yusuf prayed Almighty Allah (SWT) to forgive the shortcomings of the late Sardaunan Sokoto, admit him into Aljannatul Firdaus, and grant his family, the government and people of Sokoto State, and the entire nation the strength and fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

Gov. Yusuf Receives FG Delegation Ahead of Groundbreaking of Kano Light Rail Project

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has received a delegation from the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) and Mota-Engil Nigeria ahead of the groundbreaking ceremony of the Kano Light Rail Project recently approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Governor's spokesman, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, on Thursday.

The delegation, led by the Dr. Armstrong Ume Takang of Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) and the Chairman of Mota-Engil Nigeria, Mr. Kola Karim, met with the Governor at the Kano State Governor's Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja, to brief him on the level of preparations for the commencement of the project.

The Kano Light Rail Project, approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at a contract sum of ₦1.05 trillion, is expected to transform urban transportation in Kano, improve connectivity, ease traffic congestion and stimulate economic activities across the state.

Governor Yusuf welcomed the delegation and reiterated the commitment of the Kano State Government to working closely with the Federal Government and the project contractors to ensure the successful execution of the landmark infrastructure project.

He described the light rail initiative as a strategic investment that will strengthen Kano's position as the commercial hub of Northern Nigeria while providing residents with a modern, safe and efficient mass transit system.

The Governor further expressed profound appreciation to the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces Alhaji Bola Ahmed Tunubu for considering to benefit from the laudable project. 

He also extended special gratitude to Hon. Abubakar Kabir Bichi, Chairman House Committee on Appropriation for providing necessary legislative support on the project.

A cewarsa, an ɗora wa kwamitin alhakin murƙushe hanyoyin safarar miyagun kwayoyi, yaƙi da shaye-shaye, tallafa wa masu neman gyara ta hanyar shirye-shiryen farfaɗowa da kuma tabbatar da gurfanar da masu laifi a gaban kotu.

Ya bayyana masu safarar miyagun kwayoyi a matsayin manyan maƙiyan al'umma, yana mai cewa su ne babban abin da kwamitin zai fi mayar da hankali a kansa.

Shugaban kwamitin ya kuma bayyana cewa, bisa ƙididdigar Rundunar 'Yan Sandan Jihar Kano, kusan kashi 70 cikin 100 na manyan laifukan da aka samu a jihar a shekarar 2025 suna da alaƙa da shan miyagun kwayoyi.

Ya ƙara da cewa kwamitin zai kuma ɗauki mataki kan ƙungiyoyin 'yan daba, yana mai tunatar da cewa umarnin zartarwa da Gwamna Abba Kabir Yusuf ya sanya ya haramta irin waɗannan ƙungiyoyi ƙarƙashin Sashe na 97A na Dokar Hukunta Manyan Laifuka ta Jihar Kano. Ya ce duk wanda aka samu da laifin kasancewa mamba a irin waɗannan haramtattun ƙungiyoyi na fuskantar hukuncin ɗaurin shekaru biyar aƙalla idan kotu ta same shi da laifi.

Rimingado ya ce kwamitin zai yi amfani da tattara bayanan sirri, haɗin gwiwa da hukumomin tsaro da kuma goyon bayan al'umma wajen yaƙi da laifukan da suka shafi miyagun kwayoyi da tabbatar da zaman lafiya a jihar.

Ya kuma yi kira ga iyaye da su ƙara sa ido kan tarbiyya da ayyukan 'ya'yansu, yana mai cewa kulawar iyaye na taka muhimmiyar rawa wajen hana shaye-shayen miyagun kwayoyi da kuma shigar matasa cikin ayyukan ta'addanci da laifuffuka.

A ƙarshe, shugaban kwamitin ya buƙaci kafafen yaɗa labarai, shugabannin al'umma da sauran masu ruwa da tsaki da su mara wa gwamnati baya ta hanyar wayar da kan jama'a game da illolin shan miyagun kwayoyi da safarar su ba bisa ka'ida ba.

Information Minister Commends NTA's State-of-the-Art Studio, National Press Centre Upgrade

The Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has praised the completion of a state-of-the-art television studio at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Headquarters in Abuja, describing it as a significant milestone in the Federal Government's drive to modernise public broadcasting in Nigeria.

In a statement by the Special Assistant Media, Rabiu Ibrahim the Minister was Speaking after inspecting the newly completed facility on Monday, the Minister said the project, alongside the ongoing renovation of the National Press Centre, reflects President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's commitment to strengthening the nation's public information infrastructure.

According to him, the new NTA studio ranks among the finest broadcasting facilities not only in Nigeria but also across Africa, underscoring the administration's determination to reposition government-owned media organisations for improved service delivery.

"What we have seen today is the fulfilment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's promise to modernise Nigeria's public broadcasting facilities. This is one of the best studios in Nigeria and among the finest on the African continent," the Minister stated.

Mohammed Idris explained that the studio forms part of a comprehensive investment programme covering the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), the Voice of Nigeria (VON), and the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He commended the management and staff of the NTA for supporting the transformation initiative, stressing that the reforms are not limited to infrastructure but also focus on enhancing content quality, professionalism, innovation and staff capacity development.

The Minister further disclosed that the Federal Government is procuring modern broadcasting equipment for NTA stations across the country, a move he said will strengthen public service broadcasting and improve information dissemination nationwide.

He also described the recently relaunched Digital Switch Over (DSO) programme as a major step towards transforming Nigeria's broadcasting industry.

"The Digital Switch Over and the investments in modern broadcast infrastructure are opening a new chapter for Nigeria's information sector. By the time this reform programme is completed, Nigerians will witness a truly transformed public broadcasting system," he said.

On staff welfare, the Minister reaffirmed President Tinubu's commitment to improving the working conditions of employees in the information sector, noting that sustainable reforms require investment in both infrastructure and human capital.

The Minister later inspected the ongoing renovation of the National Press Centre at Radio House, where he expressed satisfaction with the pace of work.

He said the upgraded facility would serve as a modern media hub equipped with world-class amenities and high-speed internet services to support journalists covering government activities and other national events.

"The National Press Centre must fulfil its mandate as Nigeria's foremost media hub. It is being redesigned to provide journalists with a conducive environment and modern facilities to carry out their professional responsibilities effectively," he said.

Mohammed Idris urged the contractors handling the project to ensure timely completion, adding that he would conduct a final inspection before the facility is officially commissioned.

He reiterated that the ongoing investments in government-owned media organisations demonstrate the Federal Government's resolve to strengthen public communication, promote credible information dissemination and position Nigeria's information sector in line with global best practices.

Kano Neighbourhood Watch Hands Over Suspected Fake Cosmetic Products to Consumer Protection Council

In furtherance of the Kano State Government’s unwavering commitment to protecting the health, safety and well-being of its citizens, the Kano State

According to the statement by the Director Public Engagement of the Outfit, Yusuf Abubakar Ibrahim, Neighbourhood Watch Corps has handed over a vehicle conveying suspected substandard and/or expired cosmetic products to the Kano State Consumer Protection Council for comprehensive investigation and necessary regulatory action.

The Commander General of the Corps, Lt. Col. Aminu Yusuf Abdulmalik Rtd, who was represented by the Director Operations, Habibu Balarabe Madigawa, stated that the handover demonstrates the Corps’ resolve to support relevant government agencies in combating the circulation of harmful and counterfeit products within Kano State.

He disclosed that at about 1145 hours on Sunday, 26 July 2026, personnel of the Corps, while on routine patrol at Gaida Sabon Titi, Panshekara, intercepted a white Toyota Hilux motor vehicle bearing Lagos Registration Number LMD 764 XY.

According to the Director Operations, preliminary observations revealed that the vehicle was conveying a large quantity of cosmetic products of different brands suspected to be substandard and/or expired.

He further explained that the vehicle was travelling from Lagos and was attempting to gain entry into Kano Metropolitan through the Karaye axis instead of the conventional Zaria Road entry route, a development that raised reasonable suspicion and prompted the patrol team to conduct further checks.

Following the interception, the vehicle and its contents were secured and subsequently handed over to the officials of the Kano State Consumer Protection Council, to facilitate a thorough inspection, laboratory analysis where necessary and further investigation to ascertain the authenticity, quality, safety and regulatory compliance of the products in accordance with extant laws.

Habibu Madigawa reaffirmed that the Kano State Neighbourhood Watch Corps remains committed to working closely with regulatory institutions and other security agencies to prevent the distribution of counterfeit, expired and substandard products capable of endangering public health and undermining consumer confidence.

He further commended the vigilance and professionalism displayed by the Corps’ personnel during the operation and reiterated the commitment of the administration of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State to strengthening inter-agency collaboration in safeguarding the lives, health and economic interests of the people of Kano State.

The Director Operations urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious movement of goods or activities capable of threatening public safety, assuring residents that the Corps will continue to discharge its statutory responsibilities with diligence, professionalism and unwavering dedication to the service of the State.

Special Task Force Chairman Visits Kano Reformative Centre Kiru, Strengthens Partnership Against Drug Abuse

The Chairman of the Kano State Special Task Force Committee on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Barr. Muhuyi Magaji Rimin Gado, has reaffirmed the Committee's determination to strengthen collaboration with key institutions in the fight against drug abuse, illicit trafficking, and related social vices.

According to the statement by the Media and Publicity Unit of the Task Force, Barr. Muhuyi made the commitment during an official visit to the Kano Reformative Centre, Kiru, where he was accompanied by the Provost of the Anti-Corruption Institute, Barr. Rahama M.A. Yusuf, and the Centre's Coordinator, Miss Cheryl Kwagga.

The visit was aimed at assessing the Centre's operations and exploring ways to enhance ongoing efforts in rehabilitation, prevention, and the successful reintegration of individuals recovering from drug addiction into society.

During an interactive session with the management of the Centre, discussions focused on strengthening rehabilitation programmes, improving institutional cooperation, and identifying practical measures to address the growing challenge of drug abuse and illicit trafficking across Kano State.

Barr. Muhuyi stressed that the Task Force remains committed to working with government agencies, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders to implement sustainable strategies that will curb substance abuse and promote public safety.

He noted that effective collaboration and coordinated action among relevant institutions remain essential to building a healthier, safer, and drug-free society.
